RVFD Smoke-N-Stroke set Saturday at RCC
The Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department is holding its Third Annual Smoke & Stroke, golf tournament/ steak cookoff, Saturday at the Rockdale Country Club.
There is also margarita and salsa competition. Tee off is at 8 a.m., turn in times are: 3 p.m., margaritas; 3:30, salsa; 4, steak and 5, cook’s choice.
United Way Radiothon Thursday, Lee’s Landing
The annual South Milam County United Way (SMCUW) radiothon is set for 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Lee’s Landing.
The Radiothon airs over KRXT-FM. It benefits the SMCUW which supports 19 organizations.

Substitute training set for teaching in RISD
A mandatory training for all new RISD substitute teachers will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday Sept. 20, in the Rockdale ISD Conference Room, 529 West Davilla.
Training will include processes for the automated substitute service system Rockdale ISD has implemented. Individuals interested in becoming substitute teachers must attend this training in order to qualify for the substitute list.
Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and provide consent to a criminal background check.
Substitute applications can be picked up at the RISD Central Office prior to the training.

Jones Scholarship Run Sept 29th in Caldwell
CALDWELL—The first Sunflower/Melodie Hope Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund 5K Run/Walk and Kids 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk is set for Saturday, Sept. 29, at Caldwell’s Davidson Creek Park.
It’s in honor of the late Melodie Jones who died in a US 79 accident.
Registration is $30 for the 5K run and $25 for the kids run.

Kids run starts at 8:30 and the Sunflower Fun Run at 9.
Fall Music Festival set
downtown on Oct. 6th
The first Rockdale Fall Music Festival is set for Saturday, Oct. 6 in downtown Rockdale.
Activities will center on Wolf Park, corner of Main and Milam, and will include live music, carnival booths, a pumpkin patch, vintage cars and campers, chili cookoff and more.
The day will also feature the annual Kay Theatre 5-K run and walk, domino and washer tourneys and tours of the historic I&GN Depot Museum.

Campus Councils seek volunteers for openings
The Rockdale ISD has openings for the following places on Campus Education Councils:
Elementary, two parent representatives; one business representative; intermediate, one business, one community; junior-high, two parent, one community; high school one each, parent, community and business.
Representatives are selected by principals and other council members.
Councils serve as advisory groups to principals but have no regulatory powers.
None may be employees of the district. Parent reps must have students enrolled in the RISD, community reps must reside in the district, be at least 18 and cannot be the parent of a student enrolled in the district.
Business reps must own or operate a business, but the business does not have to be in the RISD.
Oct. 5 is the deadline to pick up, or request, an application from the RISD Central Office or any campus offi ce.
Fire chiefs announce
winners in fund-raiser
CAMERON—Tim Cheatham won first prize, a $1,000 Visa card, in the Milam County Fire Chief’s Association drawing Friday.
Cameron Chief Henry Horelica said other winners, all winning guns, were Mack Doskocil, Jeff Kuzel, Cheatham (again), J. R. Lester, Kenneth Zbikowski, The Bling Box, Frank Graham, Susan Reinders and Calvin Whiteley.
‘Zombies’ needed for 5K Run on October 6th
High school students are being sought to portray zombies” for the Kay Theatre 5K Run on October 6, an opportunity for students to earn community service hours.
Time is 7 to 10 a.m.
