Substitute training set for teaching in RISD

A mandatory training for all new RISD substitute teachers will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday in the Rockdale ISD Conference Room, 529 West Davilla.

Training will include processes for the automated substitute service system Rockdale ISD has implemented. Individuals interested in becoming substitute teachers must attend this training in order to qualify for the substitute list.

Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and provide consent to a criminal background check.

Substitute applications can be picked up at the RISD Central Office prior to the training.

Jones Scholarship Run Sept 29th in Caldwell

CALDWELL—The first Sunflower/Melodie Hope Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund 5K Run/Walk and Kids 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk is set for Saturday, Sept. 29, at Caldwell’s Davidson Creek Park.

It’s in honor of the late Melodie Jones who died in a US 79 accident.

Registration is $30 for the 5K run and $25 for the kids run.

On-line registration is at www.melodiesmeow.com.Same-day registration is 7:30 to 8:15 a.m.

Kids run starts at 8:30 and the Sunflower Fun Run at 9.

Campus Councils seek volunteers for openings

The Rockdale ISD has openings for the following places on Campus Education Councils:

Elementary, two parent representatives; one business representative; intermediate, one business, one community; junior-high, two parent, one community; high school one each, parent, community and business.

Representatives are selected by principals and other council members.

Councils serve as advisory groups to principals but have no regulatory powers.

None may be employees of the district. Parent reps must have students enrolled in the RISD, community reps must reside in the district, be at least 18 and cannot be the parent of a student enrolled in the district.

Business reps must own or operate a business, but the business does not have to be in the RISD.

Oct. 5 is the deadline to pick up, or request, an application from the RISD Central Office or any campus offi ce.

‘Zombies’ needed for 5K Run on October 6th

High school students are being sought to portray “zombies” for the Kay Theatre 5K Run on Oct. 6, an opportunity for students to earn community service hours.

Time is 7 to 10 a.m.

‘Wiener Dogs’ sought

for Oct. 6 race event

Owners of “wiener dogs and wannabe wiener dogs” can now sign up to enter the wiener dog races on Oct 6 on the north side of the Kay Theatre.

Registration for the 70-foot course is from 10 to 11:15 a.m., “boot camp” dogs practice for free from 11:15 to 11:45 and races begin at 12-noon.

Entry fee is $20 per dog, $25 on race day. Forms are available at Sabal Dental, Rainbow Courts, Rockdale PAWS and Rockdale Fall Festival Facebook pages.

GOP Women plan social event Saturday at Kay

Milam County Republican Women will host a social event at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Kay Theatre.

Karen McDermott, spokesperson, said local, state and federal representatives will attend.

She said the Republican Women will provide food and drinks.

American Legion Post

set to host VSO officer

American Legion Carlyle Post 358 will host a presentation by Milam Veterans Service Officer Ken Janicek, at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct 1 at the Post Home, 2534 North FM 487.

Janicek assists veterans with claims, issues and questions about potential benefi ts.

He will discuss veterans benefits and how to apply for them.

Surplus food giveaway Thursday at KC Hall

Central Texas Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry will host its monthly giveaway at 9 a.m. Thursday at the KC Hall.

Volunteers are needed and clients are asked to bring sacks and boxes for the groceries. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Thorndale city tax rate tables to Monday action

THORNDALE—Action on the City of Thorndale’s new tax rate has been tabled until a 6 p.m. Monday session at City Hall.

Council members met in regular session last Wednesday but did not vote on the tax rate.

During the meeting the council okayed increases in the water-sewer rate and garbage rate.

A rate increase request from Waste Connections was also approved.

The council also adopted Thorndale’s 2018-19 budget.
