Hearne author DuBois slates library program

Hearne native Erica DuBois, who writes under the name E. L. DuBois, will be at the Rockdale City Library for a book signing and autograph session at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29.

She is the author of “The Glass Mask: Monsters Lurk Beneath,” described as an “autobiographical novel framed as a dark fairytale.”

DuBois was born in Hearne, grew up in Sugar Land and moved back to Hearne about five years ago.

The program is free. It is one of a series of Thursday evening presentations held at the city library.

Blood drawing ahead

Dec. 9th at St. Paul’s

THORNDALE—Baylor Scott & White Health will host a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 12-noon Sunday, Dec. 9 at St. Paul Lutheran Church and School in Thorndale.

A photo ID is required to donate.

All blood donors during December will receive a long-sleeve T-shirt.

Nativity displays set for Rockdale LDS church

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will hold its annual nativity display in November and December.

Over 100 nativity sets will be on display at 310 Calhoun Drive in Rockdale.

Days and times are: 5-8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 28; 3-8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 29; 5-8 p.m., Friday Nov. 30 and 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1.

Arrests in Milam, Bell for several burglaries

Several persons have been arrested in two counties in connection with a series of Milam County burglaries.

Sheriff Chris White said property of a deceased individual was burglarized several times and family members set up video surveillance equipment which captured some images.

Arrested in Milam County was Robin Reese, 63, of Harker Heights.

He was released from the Milam County Jail after posting $50,000 bond.

Arrested in Bell County were Benjamin Turner, 32, Holland; Loggan Bailey Pedigo, 20, Temple; and Mitchael Don Hamilton Jr., 46, Belton.

All were charged with engaging in organized criminal activity and other charges were also filed.

Sheriff White said the investigation is still ongoing and several other warrants have been issued in connection with the incidents.

‘Tree of Angels’ ahead Dec. 10 at museum

CAMERON—The Milam County & District Attorney’s Office will sponsor the 20th Annual “Tree of Angels” ceremony at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10 at the Milam County Museum in downtown Cameron.

The “Tree of Angels” program is celebrated and enables survivors of violent crime and victims’ families to place an angel ornament on a special Christmas tree. Members of the armed services will also be remembered and honored.

Participants are asked to bring an angel ornament tagged with the first and last name of the person to be remembered or honored. Those not able to attend should contact Natalie Keen at (254) 697-7013 or keen@milamcounty.net for more information.

Refreshments will be served. Donations can be made to the Tree of Angels Account at Buckholts State Bank in Cameron, Buckholts or Rogers.

Milam Pecan Show slated Friday at extension office

CAMERON—The annual Milam County Pecan Show will be held Friday, Nov. 30 at the extension office in Cameron.

It includes a Pecan Management Workshop held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided to those that RSVP in advance.at 254-697-7045.

Pecan entries must be turned in by 9 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, to the Extension Office.

Forty-two pecans of the same variety from this year’s crop in a plastic zip-top bag comprise an entry.

RISD Bands slate yule concert for Dec. 6th

RISD Bands Christmas Concert will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in the Rockdale High School Auditorium, according to Director Adrian Acevedo.

Acevedo said the following groups will be performing:

RJH Beginning Band, RJH Symphonic Band, RHS Jazz Band, RHS Big Blue Band and the RHS Color Guard.

Admission is free.

“We invite the community to join us as we celebrate our students’ achievements in our band program, with joyful Christmas music,” he said.

Dec. 10th reception will honor outgoing judge

CAMERON—Dave Barkemeyer, outgoing Milam County Judge will be honored with a reception in the Milam County Courthouse on Monday, Dec. 10.

The reception will be held at 11 a.m., immediately following the regularly scheduled commissioners court meeting which will be held in the commissioners courtroom on the second floor

Barkemeyer served two terms as county judge. He was first elected in 2010 and re-elected in 2014.

He passed up the 2018 ballot and Steve Young was elected as his successor.

Judge-elect appointed to boards, committees

CAMERON—Milam County Commissioners, meeting in regular session Monday in the county courthouse, named county judge-elect Steve Young to replace outgoing Judge Dave Barkemeyer on several boards and committees.

Young, who was elected Nov. 6 and will take office in January, will replace Barkemeyer on the Hill Country Transit Board, CTCOG executive committee and Hill Country Community Action Executive Committee.

In other business Monday, commissioners approved deputations for Amberly Weyand (sheriff’s office), Margot Contreras (district clerk’s office) and Patricia Torres (district clerk’s office).

Commissioners also okayed a one-year technology services extension agreement with DG Technologies.
