Series of meetings set for water rate input
A series of public, town hall, meetings have been scheduled for early in 2019 to discuss Rockdale’s changing water rate situation.
On Monday, city council members heard preliminary figures on how much water and sewer rates will need to be increased to cover a 30-year, $48-million expenditure to replace the city’s water and sewer systems. (See story, page 1A).
Whittaker said public meetings will be held the following dates and places:
• Jan. 3, New Hope Baptist Church.
• Jan. 14, regular monthly city council meeting, moved to Patterson Civic Center.
• Jan. 17, Patterson Civic Center.
• Feb. 11, regular monthly city council meeting, site to be announced.
At Monday’s session it was suggested the city purchase water from Southwest Milam Water Supply Corporation as part of its overhaul.
Whittaker said he supports the idea and noted Southwest Milam has been asked to make a written proposal to bring to the council on Jan. 14.
“This would get us away from managing water quality and gives us the ability to reduce current costs, employees and not have to worry about economic development issues when it comes to the capacity of our system,” he said.
