Saturday blood drive honors Naomi Ruelas

An American Red Cross Blood drive in memory of a 17-year-old who lost her battle with a rare blood disorder in 2013 is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the fellowship hall of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 234 San Gabriel.

Naomi Ruelas was a resident of Colorado Springs, CO. Numerous relatives live in Rockdale.

Naomi received many blood transfusions during her battle with hemophygocytic lemphohistiocytosis.

Those who give blood Friday will receive a long-sleeved Red Cross T-shirt while supplies last.

To set up an appointment, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org.

Potential donors may also go to www.redcrossblood.org/rapidpass to finish the pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online before coming to Saturday’s appointment.

The Red Cross notes that this must be done before the day of the drive.

Rockdale resident dies in Lee County wreck

A 20-year-old Rockdale man died in a one-vehicle accident outside of Lexington, according to the Lee County Department of Public Safety.

They said Piemann was a passenger in a northbound 2003 Dodge pickup which veered off the northbound lane and hit a tree.

Troopers said Piemann, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected.

The driver, 22-year-old Albert Lara-Flores of Lexington was airlifted to an area hospital.

Surplus food visit set Thursday at KC Hall

Central Texas Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry will have a distribution at 9 a.m. Thursday, at the KC Hall east of Rockdale.

Since the distribution relies totally on volunteer help, volunteers will be needed and greatly appreciated, according to Deanie Houser, spokesperson.

Contact Houser at 512-446-3336 for further information. Distributions are held the third Thursday of each month. Clients are asked to bring sacks, boxes or containers for groceries.

Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult to participate.

Series of meetings set for water rate input

A series of public, town hall, meetings have been scheduled for early in 2019 to discuss Rockdale’s changing water rate situation.

Recently, city council members heard preliminary figures on how much water and sewer rates will need to be increased to cover a 30-year, $48-million expenditure to replace the city’s water and sewer systems.

The initial proposals reflected rates more than doubling and elimination of the current flat rate for the first 2,000 gallons.

Whittaker said public meetings will be held in the following dates and places:

• Jan. 3, New Hope Baptist Church.

• Jan. 14, regular monthly city council meeting, moved to Patterson Civic Center.

• Jan. 17, Patterson Civic Center.

• Feb. 11, regular monthly city council meeting, site to be announced.

Thorndale ISD praised for business practices

THORNDALE—Thorn-dale ISD trustees heard plenty of compliments about the way the district handled its finances in the recent December board session.

Business Manager Rebecca Peel reported TISD had scored 100 percent on the state’s Financial Integrity Rating System.

Later in the session, accountant Robert Gattilia of Singelton, Clark & Go. presented the district’s 2018 annual financial and compliance report.

Gattilia said Thorndale ISD was the only district he audits “which has no discrepancies to be fixed.”
