Andy Griffith program ahead at city library
Jim Platt will present a program, “A Tribute to the Comedian Andy Griffith” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library.
Platt is a former minister at Forest Grove Christian Church, who now resides in the Forest Grove Community south of Rockdale.
Griffith, of course, is known mostly for his iconic Andy Griffith Show, which ran from 1960 to 1969.
Platt said the program includes a brief presentation from memory of three tracks from the album “Andy Griffith: Just For Laughs.”
Faust benefit Jan. 20th with BBQ, live auction
A benefit fund raiser for cancer patient Andy Faust is set for Sunday, Jan. 20, at The Ranch, 415 West US 79.
Proceeds will help defray medical costs.
Barbecue plates, priced at $10, will be sold from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A live auction will begin at 2 p.m. and auction items are being sought.

One hurt in accidents
over New Year holiday
Department of Public Safety State Troopers investigated several accidents in the Rockdale area over the New Year holiday period with one resulting in an injury.
Trooper Broderick Sims responded to an accident at 12:35 a.m. New Year’s Day on US 79 near County Road 346.
Sims said a vehicle operated by James Cotten, 71, of Milano swerved to miss a hog in the roadway and collided with a tree.
He was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Bryan, for treatment.
Sims termed vehicle damages as “minor.”
Two accidents were reported as rains moved through Milam County on Wednesday, Jan. 2.
Trooper Jacob Luna said a vehicle driven by Marlene Lindsey, 71, of Jewett was in collision with a truck trailer at 2:02 p.m. on US 79 near CR 234.
Moderate damage was reported. The truck driver did not stop, according to the DPS.
Moderate damage was also reported in a one-vehicle accident a 3:38 p.m. on US 79 near CR 354.
Trooper Michael McHale listed the driver as Raymond Fang, 22, of Friendswood.
Filing to start for area cities, school districts
Filing begins Wednesday (Jan. 16) for 2019 city and school district elections in Milano and Thorndale.
Terms of Milano ISD school trustees Carl Blake, Michael Andrews and Lynette Taylor are expiring this year.
City of Milano terms expiring are those of Mayor Roddy Gage and council members David Gunnels Jr., Glenda Westbrook and Steve Honeycutt.
Filing for both races is in the Milano ISD Superintendent’s Office, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays.
Terms of Thorndale ISD trustees David Hall (school board president), Kirk Becker and Dean Betak are expiring this year.
Filing is 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays in the TISD superintendent’s office.
Terms of Mayor George Galbreath and council members Larry Drabek and Stephanie Churchman are expiring in 2019.
Filing is at Thorndale City Hall, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Chris Holcombe Mardi Gras Bash set Feb. 23rd
CAMERON—Saturday, Feb. 23, is the date for the seventh annual Mardi Gras bash to raise funds for the Christine Holcombe Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The event starts at 6 p.m. at Simon George Hall, 401 South Karnes in Cameron. It includes a Cajun food dinner, live auction, a gun fund raiser and activities for the kids.
Adult tickets are $10, $5 for children under 18.

Children’s theater play schedules audition
CAMERON—Auditions for “Peter Pan,” Milam Community Theater’s first children’s play are set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Williams Civic Center.
Children ages 7 to 18 are invited to try out for the more than 30 parts, both speaking and non-speaking roles.
Rehearsals will be once a week. “No acting experience is necessary,” spokesperson Brenda Sanders said. “We will have so much fun and even learn stage combat. It is free to participate.”
