Cattle Raisers honor Milam’s prosecutor
Milam County District Attorney Bill Torrey has been named 2019 DA of the Year by the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.
Torrey will be honored at the group’s Expo in Fort Worth March 31.
“I understand how cattle theft, and other such crimes, take a toll on the rural community,” Torrey said. “Our farmers and ranchers remain the backbone of this state. I am honored and humbled by their vote of confidence,” he said.
World of Art program Thursday at city library
“Explore the Exciting and Spontaneous World of Art” will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, in the city library.
Jean Griffin, co-owner of J’Lin’s Studio Gallery in Thorndale, will conduct the session.
Griffin is art teacher and National Art Society sponsor at Rockdale High School.
She will demonstrate two of the teen/adult classes offered at the gallery. Demonstrations include basics of acrylic painting, sketching and basic drawing and collage techniques. The program is free.
Surplus food visit set Thursday at KC Hall
Central Texas Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry will have a distribution at 9 a.m. Thursday, at the KC Hall east of Rockdale.
Since the distribution relies totally on volunteer help, volunteers will be needed and greatly appreciated, according to Deanie Houser, spokesperson.
Contact Houser at 512-446-3336 for further information. Distributions are held the third Thursday of each month. Clients are asked to bring sacks, boxes or containers for groceries.
Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult to participate.
Holcombe ‘bash’ ahead Saturday in Cameron
CAMERON—Organizers are putting the final touches on the Seventh annual Mardi Gras Bash which will be held this Saturday, at Simon George Hall in Cameron.
The event will start at 6 p.m., and includes an authentic Cajun food dinner, auctions including a gun fund-raiser giveaway and children’s activities.
Adult tickets are $10 and children under 18 are admitted for $5.
Tickets can be purchased at the Milam County Extension Office in Cameron, The Rockdale Reporter and Rodenbeck Farm & Ranch in Thorndale.
Benefit ride scheduled at Nat’s March 30th
A benefit ride/fund raiser for Dendy Brown is scheduled for March 30 leaving from Nat’s near Milano.
Brown was critically injured in an accident last September.
Registration for the ride starts at 9 a.m. Fee if $20 for riders, $25 with passenger. T-shirts are $20, pre-order.
Food is provided to participants.
Barbecue plates, priced at $10, will be sold to the public from 11:30 a.m until sold out. There’s also live music by Southern Groove, live and silent auctions.

POSGCD conservation program at city library
Doug Box, education coordinator for the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District (POSGCD) will present a water conservation program at 6 p.m. Feb. 28 at the city library.
Topics include irrigation alternatives for the rainfall harvester, installing your own rainwater harvesting system, saving water in your garden, becoming an aquifer conservancy partner and more.
Box has written six books on photography and has owned several studios.
Blanchard recertifies with state organization
DENTON—Rockdale City Secretary Terry Blanchard has competed her recertification as a Registered Texas Municipal Clerk.
Recertification is not automatic. It requires 72 hours of classroom instruction plus options.
She received her recertification certificate recently at the University of North Texas.
