County okays pursuit of new sheriff’s video

CAMERON—Milam County Commissioners, meeting Monday in regular session, gave Sheriff Chris White the go-ahead to move forward in planning stages for a new $180,000 video system for his department.

White said said the current systems “does everything it is supposed to do” but falls short in some critical areas.

He noted it cannot produce videos which could be released to the public under privacy laws. White said the system cannot blur faces or stop audio in the middle of recording.

Also Monday, commissioners heard a report on “Film Friendly Guidelines” from Kara Clore, executive director of the Rock-dale Municipal Development District.

Benefit ride scheduled at Nat’s March 30th

A benefit ride/fund raiser for Dendy Brown is scheduled for March 30 leaving from Nat’s near Milano.

Brown was critically injured in an accident last September.

Registration for the ride starts at 9 a.m. Fee is $20 for riders, $25 with passenger. T-shirts are $20, pre-order.

Food is provided to participants.

Barbecue plates, priced at $10, will be sold to the public from 11:30 a.m. until sold out. There’s also live music by Southern Groove, live and silent auctions.

sets job fair March 22

Workforce Solutions of Central Texas-Rockdale will host a job fair March 22 at the Patterson Civic Center, according to Julia Cardona, center director.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 12-noon.

She said employers are welcome to attend but must reserve tables by Wednesday, March 20.

Chamber banquet

ahead on March 28th

The Rockdale Chamber of Commerce Banquet is set for March 28 at the KC Hall, this year.

“People are going all out ‘Hollywood style,’ this year and dressing the part,” Chamber spokesperson Denise Brock said.

“We will have a photo booth as in the past, so make the most of it. Be sure and send in your nominations for awards,” Brock said.

Cases handled through 20th District Court

CAMERON—Six cases were adjudicated recently in 20th District Court, according to Prosecutor Bill Torrey, who listed them as follows:

• Sharon Rose Alfaro, 42, Houston, probation revoked. She was out bond from Montgomery County, while being charged with Milam County offenses.

• Clarissa Renee Habib, 32, Rogers, was placed on 5 years deferred adjudication, 102-day county jail term, $2,500 restitution of $21,586 to victims after pleading guilty to burglary of habitation.

• Shakayla Alexander, 23, Cameron, 3 years deferred adjudication, $2,000 fine and restitution to victim to be determined after pleading guilty to aggravated assault with deadly weapon.

• Carolyn Ann Grosshans, 25, Rockdale, was placed on 3 years deferred adjudication, drug and substance abuse evaluation, $2,500 fine, $180 restitution to DPS lab after pleading guilty to possession of controlled substance (28 to 200 grams).

• Ashley Samone Pope, 27, Cameron, was placed on 2 years deferred adjudication, anger management, $2,500 fine after pleading guilty misdemeanor assault causing bodily injury.

• William Oscar Bright III, 55, Milano, 4 years deferred adjudication, 197-day county jail term, $1,500 fine after pleading guilty to burglary of habitation.

Genealogy program

Kevin Klaus of the Texas Land Office Genealogical Research Resources will present a program at 6 p.m. March 21 a the city library

Klaus has collected records for over 30 years on his family. Over the past 17 years he has been one of the lead researchers at the land office.

Topics will include:

Importance of using early land records in genealogy; researching ancestors who arrived during the Republic of Texas era and prior; Texas’ German immigration movement in the 1840s; and using online resources such as online databases.

The program is free and open to the public.
