Homecoming getting
‘new look’ for 2019
Rockdale’s 85th homecoming will feature something new when participants gather June 9 in the Patterson Civic Center.
“Recognizing the important role played by families who have lived in Rockdale for generations, and who have made multiple contributions to the history and growth of the community, the Association will honor one such family each year,” Barbara Gross, Homecoming Association president said.
The first honorees will be the Cooke Family, four-generation publishers of The Rockdale Reporter.
Cookes have published The Reporter, since 1911 when John Esten Cooke purchased the newspaper.
Homecoming begins at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and donuts and a meal prepared by officers of the association will be served at noon.
Flag display at Bridge Park for Memorial Day
American Legion Carlyle Post 358, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6525, VFW Auxiliary and the City of Rockdale will team up to post flags in Bridge Park during Memorial Day weekend in a red-white-and-blue tribute.
Ron Rabinowitz, spokesman, said the groups will post one flag each for area men and women who died in World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War and the Global War on Terror.
“There will be separate sections for each,” Rabinowitz said. “At night lights will bathe the area in red. It’s going to be quite a sight.”
He said the groups will place flags at the park starting at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 23. “Anyone who wants to watch is invited to come on out or, even better, help us place them.”
The annual Memorial Day ceremony is set for May 27 at the Legion Post, 2354 North FM 487.
