25-year sentence for

2017 Cameron murder

CAMERON—A 35-year-old Cameron man was found guilty of murder last week by a 20th Court jury in connection with the 2017 shooting death of a Cameron resident.

Alvin Melton was sentenced to a 25-year prison term by the same jury which found him guilty.

Melton was indicted for murder in February, 2018, in connection with the September, 2017, death of 32-year-old Courtney Latrell Williams.

According to Cameron police, they responded to the 400 block of South Jefferson after receiving a report of shots fired and a shooting victim.

Officers arrived at the scene and found Williams dead from a shotgun wound to the head.

Alvin Melton was charged with murder and his brother, John Leorn Melton Jr., 46, was charged with aggravated assault.

The jury deliberated for just over 90 minutes before assessing the 25-year punishment.

Prosecutor Bill Torrey said Melton will have to serve one-half of his 25-year sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

“That’s day-for-day,” Torrey said.

John L. Melton’s case has not yet been adjudicated.
