Intoxication manslaughter arrest made
A 39-year-old Leander man was booked into the Milam County Jail Friday and charged with intoxication manslaughter in connection with an April 20 highway collision.
Jody Mack Wood was released the same day after posting a total of $105,000 bond.
Wood was listed as one of the drivers in the collision which took the life of 76-year-old Reynaldo Amaya-Charo of Austin.
Wood was injured in the accident.
‘Junkyard’ conviction nets arrest of local man
A 42-year-old Rockdale man, convicted last month of keeping a junkyard within 1,000 feet of a major highway, was arrested last Wednesday.
Ira Richard Thrasher remained in custody Tuesday in the Milam County Jail.
On March 20, a jury found Thrasher guilty of six counts of the offense in connection with the former All-Service Propane site in the 1300 block of East Cameron (US 79).
Following that trial the Milam County Sheriff’s Department seized some items from the site.
City Manager Chris Whittaker said the city has continued to assess periodic fines against Thrasher in an attempt to get the site cleaned up.
The sheriff’s department listed the fine total at $3,307.
Student transfers now being accepted at RISD
Parents of students transferring into the Rock-dale Independent School District from other school districts are reminded to submit application for student transfers for the 2018-2019 school year, according to Dr. Denise Monzingo, Superintendent. There is no transfer fee.
Transfer forms may be completed by contacting Dyan Shelander in the office of the superintendent at 520 West Davilla, during regular office hours, Monday through Friday.
City swimming pool opening on Saturday
Rockdale’s city swimming pool, located in Veterans Memorial Park, Brazos at Mistletoe, will open for the 2018 season at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Hours are 1 to 6 p.m., closed Mondays.
Admission is $4 per visit and season passes are available.
Project Graduation set for College Station
Project Graduation, Rockdale High School’s alcohol-free commencement night activity for RHS grads and their dates returns to Grand Central Station in College Station Friday.
Seniors will board a bus after Friday’s graduation for the trip to College Station.
About 80 seniors, or four-fifths of the Class of 2018, is expected to make the trip.
Location change ahead for local Alcoa Retirees
There has been a location change for the June 14 meeting of Rockdale Alcoa Retirees, according to group spokesman Doug Williams.
“We are changing from the Alcoa Lake Training Center to VFW Post 4009 in Thorndale,” he said. The Thorndale VFW is located on FM 486 near Fireman’s Hall.
Doors open at 5 p.m. and “an important meeting” will be held at 5:45,” he said.
Dessert group is last names beginning M-Z and there is no silent auction, Williams said.
Lunch-and-Learn program in Cameron
CAMERON—Texas State Technical College and Temple College will host a Texas Workforce Commission State Development Fund Grant Lunch and Learn for local companies from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Williams Event Center.

Rural post office will close in North Milam
CAMERON—The s Postal Service said Tuesday it will close the Burlington Post Office in far northern Milam County near the Falls County line.
Services at that location had already been suspended due to “safety concerns at the building,” according to the USPS.
The postal service said plans are to move the Burlington post office to a new location still being determined.
Customers will continue use the Rosebud Post Offi ce.
