Temporary water bill

help planned by city

To temporarily aid senior citizens with increased water bills, the City of Rock-dale is working with The Area Agency on Aging to provide supplemental financial assistance to qualified seniors, according to Curah Beard, city marketing director.

Rockdale water customers age 60-plus whose monthly income is less than $1,561 for an individual or $2,114 for a couple should attend the Intake Meeting at 9:30 a.m. June 20 at the Senior Citizens Center.

Brown Santa golf set for July 20th in Cameron

CAMERON—The ninth annual Milam County Brown Santa Golf Tourney is set for Saturday, July 20 at the Cameron Country Club.

The late Sheriff David Greene founded the tourney in 2010 to provide Christmas gifts for underprivileged Milam County children.

“Last year we had out biggest turnout ever,” Sheriff Chris White said. “As a result of the tourney we were able to provide gifts for over 400 children.”

White said hole sponsorships for 2019 are available for $100 per sign. “Anyone who would like to be a sponsor needs to get sponsorship information to us by July 5,” he said.

Sponsorship payments may be sent to 512 North Jefferson Suite A, Cameron TX 76520 (Attention: Wynema Adams.

The Brown Santa Golf Tourney will have morning golfers starting a 8 a.m. with afternoon golfers beginning at 1 p.m.

Fire calls listed

for area volunteers

Fire calls dispatched to South Milam County volunteer fire departments from the Rockdale Police Station during the past week were listed as follows:

• 9:34 p.m. June 4, electrical pole on fire, 500 block of Coulter, Rockdale VFD.

• 12:47 p.m. Thursday, fire alarm in 900 block of CR 458, Thorndale VFD found no fire.

• 11:34 a.m. Sunday, out-of-control burn 3100 block of CR 417, Thorndale VFD.

• 4:26 p.m. Monday, grass fire in ditch, US 79 and Brushy Creek, Thorn-dale VFD.

There were two calls to carbon monoxide detectors during the week.

The Rockdale VFD responded to the first call at 2:32 a.m. June 4 in the 8400 block of US 79. Volunteers were unable to locate.

Rockdale volunteers also responded to what was termed a false alarm of a carbon monoxide detector going off in the 300 block of First Avenue at 10:36 p.m. Friday.

Thorndale BBQ Cookoff ahead June 21st-23rd

THORNDALE—The annual Thorndale Volunteer Fire Department Barbecue Cookoff is set for June 21-23 at Thorndale City Park.

Highlights include a pair of dances at the park pavilion. Roger Creager will play from Friday, June 21, and the Saturday, June 22, headliner is Cory Morrow.

Dance hours both nights are 8 p.m. to midnight.

There’s a three-day softball tourney at the adjacent softball field.

Saturday, June 22, is the big day with the barbecue cookoff, arts and crafts, food booths, a 42 tourney and washer pitching.

The big weekend gets started Thursday evening, June 20, as a new Miss Thorndale is crowned at the Thorndale Revue in the TISD cafetorium.

Public meeting ahead

for huge US 79 projects

An open house-public meeting to discuss a huge improvement project to US 79 through central and eastern Rockdale, including downtown, is set for 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27, in the Patterson Civic Center.

Project layouts will be available and the city’s consultant will discuss the work to be done.

The entire project covers a point .2-miles east of US 77 to a point one-half mile west of FM 487.

The project includes resurfacing, replacement of existing curb and gutter and conversion from four-lane to three-lane (center turning lane).

Also planned for a section between Burleson and Ackerman, is rehabilitating existing sidewalks, handicap ramps, railing and lighting.

TxDOT said no additional right-of-way is needed for the projects and no businesses or homes will be displaced.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6525, and its Auxiliary, are now accepting donations for its annual school supplies drive.

School supplies will be distributed from about 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at the post home, on West US 79.
