Temporary water bill help planned by city
To temporarily aid senior citizens with increased water bills, the City of Rock-dale is working with The Area Agency on Aging to provide supplemental financial assistance to qualified seniors, according to Curah Beard, city marketing director.
Rockdale water customers age 60-plus whose monthly income is less than $1,561 for an individual or $2,114 for a couple should attend the Intake Meeting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Senior Citizens Center.

Street closings ahead for road drainage work
Street closings are planned in upcoming week while crew repair/replace driving surfaces and fix drainage.
City Manager Chris Whittaker listed locations as follows:
• Starting June 24 for two weeks, intersection of Meadow and Murray. “No Through Traffic” signs will be placed at appropriate locations.
• Starting July 1 for two weeks, intersection of Yokley and Rockdale Road. “No Through Traffic” signs will be placed at appropriate locations.
Public meeting ahead for huge US 79 projects
An open house-public meeting to discuss a huge improvement project to US 79 through central and eastern Rockdale, including downtown, is set for 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27, in the Patterson Civic Center.
Project layouts will be available and the city’s consultant will discuss the work to be done.
The entire project covers a point .2-miles east of US 77 to a point one-half mile west of FM 487.
The project includes resurfacing, replacement of existing curb and gutter and conversion from four-lane to three-lane (center turning lane).
Also planned for a section between Burleson and Ackerman, is rehabilitating existing sidewalks, handicap ramps, railing and lighting.
TxDOT said no additional right-of-way is needed for the projects and no businesses or homes will be displaced.

Rockdale hosting July Fourth fireworks in ‘19
It’s Rockdale’s turn to host the Fourth of July fireworks bash.
Fair Park will be the site of the 6 to 10 p.m. observance on Thursday, July Fourth.
According to the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce, $5 wristbands will be sold for u limited children’s games.
Food vendor will sell hot dogs, sausage, wraps, kolaches, corn-in-a-cup, nachos and funnel cakes.
Music will be by the Communities in Concert Band.
Sponsors are Atmos Energy, Citizens National Bank, Classic Bank, Rockdale Federal credit Union and Knife River concrete and Minerals.
Fire calls listed for area volunteers
Fire calls dispatched for South Milam County volunteer firefighters during the past week include the following
• 1:39 p.m. June 11, field on fire one mile off FM 1908, Thorndale VFD dispatched and found an unreported controlled burn.
• 10:27 p.m. Sunday, Rockdale VFD responded to 2009 block of Highland for live wire which fell in yard and caused very small grass fire.
• 2:23 p.m. Sunday, Rockdale VFD responded to truck on fire at US 79 and County Road 306 intersection.
• 8:36 p.m. Sunday, Rockdale VFD responded to report power outages in several areas of town due to blown transformers and leaning utility poles as storm passed through town.
• 4:38 p.m. Monday, Rockdale VFD responded to Miller Street for arcing power lines.
Heavy damage noted from Milano-area crash
Extensive damages were reported Thursday in a two-vehicles collision three miles south of Milano on Texas 36.
Drivers were listed as Jesue Pendraza, 61, of Milano and Keegan Barber, 25, of North Carolina.
Injury reports were not available from the DPS, which responded with Milano firefighters and an AMR amulance crew.
VFW Auxiliary slate school supply drive
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6525, and its Auxiliary, are now accepting donations for its annual school supplies drive.

School supplies will be distributed from about 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at the post home, on West US 79.

City of Thorndale names mayor pro tem
THORNDALE—Stephanie Churchman was named mayor pro tem in the Thorndale City Council’s meeting July 12th.
The council also directed City Administrator Keith Kiesling to investigate costs for replacing Fifth Street sewer lines and locations for a gateway monument.
Brown Santa golf set for July 20th in Cameron
CAMERON—The ninth annual Milam County Brown Santa Golf Tourney is set for Saturday, July 20 at the Cameron Country Club.
The late Sheriff David Greene founded the tourney in 2010 to provide Christmas gifts for underprivileged children.
