House sustains damage from Tuesday blaze

A Division Street house sustained heavy damage in an early Tuesday morning fire.

The Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department was called to 220 Division at 12:41 a.m.

Just over five hours previously, the RVFD had responded to a stovetop fire at the same location.

The department also responded to a rekindle around 10:30 a.m.

Fire Chief Ward Roddam said th department is still investigating the second fire and is brining in the State Fire Marshall join in the probe,

Also early Tuesday, Gause and Milano VFDs battled a structure fire at 413 Professor Smith Road in Gause.

Two injured in area accidents during week

Two persons were taken to area hospitals following separate highway accidents during the past week.

State Trooper Joshua Hendricks said a vehicle operated by Yahir Buentello of Rockdale left US 77 south of CR 333 at 6:55 a.m. Sunday, went through a culvert and hit a tree.

The driver was airlifted to Baylor Scott & White Hospital, Temple. Damages were termed extensive.

Extensive damages were also reported when a vehicle collided with hogs at 9:32 p.m. Saturday on US 77 near CR 313. Driver Darlene Galvan of Lexington was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Bryan.

Two accidents involved vehicles hitting deer as follows. No medical transports were made from either, the DPS said.

• 8:54 p.m Friday, CR 448 near Lilac Cemetery; driver, Harold Allen of Thorndale.

• 10:40 p.m. Friday, FM 487 west of CR 412; driver, Robert Springer of Rockdale.

Summer band practice continues in Rockdale

Rockdale High School Big Blue Band members will crank up the 2019-2020 school year with SASI leadership training Monday, according to director Adrian Acevedo.

Training is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. “This is only for students who signed up for SASI,” he said.

Remainder of the summer schedule is as follows:

• July 16-18, 22-24 and July 29-Aug. 2, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• Aug. 5—Parent meeting, 6 p.m.

• Aug. 5-6—8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

• Aug, 7-9, 12—4:40 to 7 p.m.

POSGCD going ‘on the road’ with new program

In support of the recent mail-out concerning the Post Oak Savannah Aquifer Conservancy Program, District staff will be available to meet with landowners to answer questions and assist folks in signing up for the program, according to Gary Westbrook, manager.

“We will be at Oak Leaf Bakery and Diner in Rockdale, Thursday, from 8 to 10 a.m.,” he said.

Brown Santa golf set for Saturday in Cameron

CAMERON—The ninth annual Milam County Brown Santa Golf Tourney is set for Saturday, at the Cameron Country Club.

The late Sheriff David Greene founded the tourney in 2010 to provide Christmas gifts for underprivileged Milam County children.

“Last year we had our biggest turnout ever,” Sheriff Chris White said.

Union picnic slated August 3rd at Ranch

The annual United Steelworkers Local 4895 picnic is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at The Ranch, according to David Edmonds, USW spokesman.

Corner closing for water line repairs

The corner of Belton and Rice is closed for about two weeks for roadway and water line replacement, according to City Manager Chris Whittaker. Work began on Tuesday.

MCT lists performance dates for newest play
