‘State photographer’ set for program at library
J. Griffis “Griff” Smith, who has been acclaimed “national photographer of Texas” by the state legislature, will present a program at 6 p.m. June 14 at the city library. Admission is free.
Smith has spent 30 years photographing Texas and traveled 250,000 miles.
He is a retired photo editor from Texas Highways magazine.
In 2016 Smith compiled the best of his images for the book “On the Road with Texas Highways.”
Student transfers now being accepted at RISD
Parents of students transferring into the Rock-dale Independent School District from other school districts are reminded to submit application for student transfers for the 2018-2019 school year, according to Dr. Denise Monzingo, Superintendent. There is no transfer fee.
Transfer forms may be completed by contacting Dyan Shelander in the office of the superintendent at 520 West Davilla, during regular office hours, Monday through Friday.
Milam 4-Hers collect 2,442 books in drive
Milam County 4-Hers collected 2,442 books in a spring book drive for the county’s libraries and schools.
County Agent Micah Holcombe said books were donated to Thorndale St. Paul Lutheran School, Thorndale Library, Gause ISD Library and the Cameron ISD Mobile Library.
“Thanks to everyone who helped donate books and to 4-Hers who counted and helped out labeling books,” Holcombe said.
RJH bands win first solo-ensemble contest
Last month, the Rock-dale ISD hosted its inaugural solo-ensemble contest at the junior-high.
Director Marco Estrada said 74 RJH students earned superior ratings and there were six with excellent ratings.
“In addition our students were also able to win all outstanding performance trophies,” he said.
Free summer meals served at Rockdale ISD
School is out, but no-cost summer meals for children 18 and under are being served at the intermediate campus.
Hours are as follows:
• Breakfast, 7:30 to 8 a.m. Monday through Thursday.
• Lunch, 11 to 11:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday.
Rockdale Intermediate School is located at 1338 West US 79, west of Walmart.
Meals will be served through June 28.

MDD directors slate meeting Wednesday
Directors of the Rock-dale Municipal Development District (MDD) were to have met in regular session at 6 p.m. Wednesday (June 6) in the MDD office.
Agenda items include a workshop and a funding request from the city for $16,739.58 for funding of airport maintenance.
Camp Hearne open house set Saturday
HEARNE—Camp Hearne, the on-site recreation of a POW camp which housed German prisoners during World War II, will host a free open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
It’s located northwest of Hearne on FM 485.
Exhibits include a “motor pool” with several vintage vehicles, including a Carrier Personnel Half-Track M-3.
Visitors will be able to see a POW exhibit and walk trails to prisoner-built camp remains.
