Fire that claimed rural home traced to lamp

A heat lamp left on a porch to warm a dog was said to be the cause of an early morning Saturday fire which claimed a Minerva area home, according to Rock-dale VFD Fire Chief Ward Rod-dam.

Volunteers from the Rockdale and Minerva VFDs were dispatched at 4:20 and 4:40 a.m. to 346 County Road 303A, near FM 1712.

There were no injuries.

Other fire calls during the past week for South Milam VFDs:

• 9:12 a.m. Thursday, electrical box on fire, CR 343, Gause VFD.

• 2:27 p.m. Sunday, hay bales on fire, CR 339, Milano VFD.

• 1:39 p.m. Monday, grass fire, FM 908 at CR 432.

• 2:51 p.m. Monday, pasture fire, FM 486, north of Thorndale, Thorndale VFD.

Thorndale flu clinic for Milam Health Dept.

THORNDALE—The Milam County Health Department will host a flu clinic from 10 to 11 a.m Thursday at the Thorndale Senior Citizens Center.

According to the Health Department, the vaccine will be given at no cost to those with Medicare Part B (must present card) while all others will be charged $30, cash or check.

Patients ages three years and older will be accepted.

Kay Theatre offers

movie on ‘Black Friday’

The Kay Theatre will show the movie “Toy Story 4” at 4 p.m. Nov. 29 on the Black Friday super-shopping day.

“This is something for dad or mom to do with the kids while the other shops,” Bob Burnett, spokesman, said.

Admission is $3 for those 12 and under, $5 for 13 and above. Concessions are always $1 at the Kay.

The animated movie stars the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key and Christina Hendricks.

Brown Santa taking

applications for 2019

Brown Santa, the Milam County Sheriff Department’s Christmas-time drive to provide toys for the needy will take applications at the sheriff’s office in Cameron from Nov. 15 to Dec. 12.

Applicants must bring a Medicaid or WIC card with the child’s name, a current utility bill, a birth certificate (if the child is not in school) or a report card/progress report if the child is in school.

Parents/guardians must have valid Texas IDs. Applications may be picked up at the sheriff’s office beginning Friday.

New, unwrapped toys may be donated at the sheriff’s office. Money may be donated at the Brown Santa account at Classic Bank or by mail to: Brown Santa/Wynema Adams, 512 North Jefferson, Cameron, TX 76520.

Oney Toy Run slated for Dec. 7 at The Ranch

The 14th Annual Buddy Oney Toy Run will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, beginning and ending at The Ranch.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. on that morning with the first bike out at 11.

Last bike will return not later than 4 p.m.

Registration is $20 per rider, $25 with passenger, or a new toy valued at $25. Registration fee includes food for participants.

‘Alternative’ graduation possible at Rockdale

Rockdale ISD has established alternative graduation requirements for students who entered high school before the 2011-2012 school year but did not graduate due to not passing all parts of the TAAS or TAKS standardized test.

It is up to the individual students to contact the district about graduating under the new provisions.

Students are eligible to graduate under the alternative requirements if they meet all other graduation requirements except for the state standardized test component. They must have taken the TAAS or TAKS at least three times in order to qualify.

Any student interested in participating in this program can visit the Rockdale ISD website, fill out the Alternate Graduation Application, and schedule an appointment with the RISD Alternate Graduation Committee for approval. Milam Tax Office slated to visit Gause Monday

GAUSE—The Milam County Tax Office will visit the Gause Volunteer Fire Department on Monday to collect taxes, according to Tax Collector Sherry Mueck.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We will assist taxpayers with payments and answer questions,” she said. “If possible, please bring your tax statements.”

Centex Food Bank sets monthly visit Thursday

The Central Texas Food Bank Pantry will host a distribution at 9 a.m. Thursday at the KC Hall parking lot.

Denise Sifuentes, spokesperson, said since the distribution relies totally on volunteer help, volunteers will be “greatly appreciated.”

For further information contact Deanie Houser at 512-446-3336. Sifuentes said clients are asked to bring sacks or boxes in which to place groceries.

The distributions are held the third Thursday of each month.

Volunteer workers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult on Thursday.

CPS board seeking yule help for kids in system

Milam County Child Protective Services is seeking help from the public to provide gifts for neglected and abused children in the system.

Those interested are asked to provide $125 or more for gifts to those children. Those donating will be given a child’s first name, age and a wish list that’s been completed by a foster parent or case worker.

Those interested in supporting the program may send their donations to PO Box 425, Rock-dale, TX, 76567.

Special Needs Support Group schedules party

Rockdale’s Special Needs Support Group will hold its annual Christmas party from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3 at the Patterson Center.

The party will feature a catered meal, face painting, cake walk, arts and crafts, “painting with a twist” along with fellowship and food.

Brookshire Bros. currently has a program called Brown Bags of Hope” where customers purchase brown bags and local store personnel decide how to distribute them.

Stores have bags of toiletries, school supplies, and meals for the holidays. All contain items which are part of Brookshire Brothers’ own or private labels. The company has also matched customer generosity by donating additional bags to address a specific or urgent need in a community.

Delis in Brookshire Bros. also have a program called “Help a Neighbor: which gives organizations and individuals a chance to purchase a complete holiday dinner for those who may otherwise have to go without during the holiday season.
