Oney Toy Run slated

for Dec. 7 at The Ranch

The 14th Annual Buddy Oney Toy Run will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, beginning and ending at The Ranch.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. on that morning with the first bike out at 11.

Last bike will return not later than 4 p.m.

Registration is $20 per rider, $25 with passenger, or a new toy valued at $25. Registration fee includes food for participants.

Short-sleeved shirts will be for sale for $20 the day of the ride. There will be a 50/50 drawing and door prizes.

Proceeds go to Milam County Child Protective Services, Milam County Brown Santa Program, Thorndale Cares and The Rockdale Christmas Round Up. In its 13-year history the “Buddy Oney” Toy Run has presented a little over $78,000 to these organizations.

CPS board seeking yule help for kids in system

Milam County Child Protective Services is seeking help from the public to provide gifts for neglected and abused children in the system.

Those interested are asked to provide $125 or more for gifts to those children. Those donating will be given a child’s first name, age and a wish list that’s been completed by a foster parent or case worker.

Those interested in supporting the program may send their donations to PO Box 425, Rockdale, TX, 76567.

Special Needs Support Group schedules party

Rockdale’s Special Needs Support Group will hold its annual Christmas party from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3 at the Patterson Center.

The party will feature a catered meal, face painting, cake walk, arts and crafts, “painting with a twist” along with fellowship and food.

Brookshire Bros. has

‘Brown Bags of Hope’

Brookshire Bros. currently has a program called Brown Bags of Hope” where customers purchase brown bags and local store personnel decide how to distribute them.

Stores have bags of toiletries, school supplies, and meals for the holidays. All contain items which are part of Brookshire Brothers’ own or private labels. The company has also matched customer generosity by donating additional bags to address a specific or urgent need in a community.

Delis in Brookshire Bros. also have a program called “Help a Neighbor: which gives organizations and individuals a chance to purchase a complete holiday dinner for those who may otherwise have to go without during the holiday season.

Roundup accepting

2019 nominations’

Nominations for persons to be served by 2019 Christmas Roundup are now being accepted.

Roundup, Rockdale’s annual program of Christmas cheer for the less fortunate, is also accepting donations from the public.

Toy donations may be taken to Rockdale Signs, 139 West Cameron (US 79), across from the Old City Hall.

Forms to nominate persons to be served by the 2019 Roundup are now available at The Rockdale Reporter, Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library, One-Stop Center, Citizens National Bank, Classic Bank, Rockdale Federal Credit Union, Rock-dale Chamber of Commerce, Rockdale City Hall and local churches.

Deadline to nominate families or individuals who are in need of assistance this Christmas will be Friday, Dec. 6.

Brown Santa taking

applications for 2019

Brown Santa, the Milam County Sheriff Department’s Christmas-time drive to provide toys for the needy will take applications at the sheriff’s office in Cameron from Nov. 15 to Dec. 12.

Applicants must bring a Medicaid or WIC card with the child’s name, a current utility bill, a birth certificate (if the child is not in school) or a report card/ progress report if the child is in school.

Parents/guardians must have valid Texas IDs. Applications may be picked up at the sheriff’s office beginning Friday.

New, unwrapped toys may be donated at the sheriff’s office. Money may be donated at the Brown Santa account at Classic Bank or by mail to: Brown Santa/Wynema Adams, 512 North Jefferson, Cameron, TX 76520.

Kouba at city library

for book signing

Former Rockdale resident Charlie Kouba will be at the city library at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12 for a presentation and book signing.

Kouba’s book “Still Crazy: The Adventure of a Lifetime” details his participation in the Texas Water Safari, from San Marcos to Seadrift, known as “The World’s Toughest Canoe Race.”

Kouba recruited several family members to assist him in the endeavor, culminating in a tw0-year adventure which resulted in the book.

Kouba, a Victoria native, worked for Alcoa and Fluor Daniel. He and wife, Anne, moved to Victoria in 2012 to be near the rivers and coastal.

Proceeds will go to the American Diabetes Association’s Camp Rainbow near Alvin, a summer camp for those living with Type 1 Diabetes.

Fire calls listed for

South Milam VFDs

Fire calls have been listed for area VFDs, although they didn’t include any actual fires, as follows:

• 9:19 a.m. Saturday, gas leak, Highland at Coffield, Rockdale VFD.

• 10:39 p.m. Saturday, smoke smell, 14100 block of US 79, Gause VFD.

• 5:44 p.m. Sunday, possibly carbon monoxide problem, 100 block of West Belton, Rockdale VFD.

No injuries reported

in Thursday accident

No injuries were reported in a two-vehicle accident at 5:30 p.m. Thursday on US 190 near CR 336, north of Milano.

Drivers were listed as Rogelio Josso of Bryan and Candy Haney of Milano.

Vehicle damages were termed “moderate,” according to the Department of Public Safety.

plans ‘Scrooge’ play

Milam Community Theater announces its second annual Christmas performance.

The MCT Children’s Theater is presenting “A Suessified Christmas Carol” a twist on the classic Charles Dickens.

Shows are set for 10 a.m., 2 and 5:30 p.m. Dec. 14 and 2 p.m. Dec. 15, all in the Williams Event Center.

The rhyming script features everyone’s favorite Dr. Seuss characters.

There are two casts. Cast A (known as Thing One) is directed by Matthew Tyson. Cast B (known as Thing Two) is directed by Seth Higginbotham. Executive Director: Danyelle Higginbotham.

Producer is Brenda Bobo Sanders.

Alternative’ graduation possible at Rockdale

Rockdale ISD has established alternative graduation requirements for students who entered high school before the 2011-2012 school year but did not graduate due to not passing all parts of the TAAS or TAKS standardized test.

It is up to the individual students to contact the district about graduating under the new provisions.

Students are eligible to graduate under the alternative requirements if they meet all other graduation requirements except for the state standardized test component. They must have taken the TAAS or TAKS at least three times in order to qualify.

Any student interested in participating in this program can visit the Rockdale ISD website, fill out the Alternate Graduation Application, and schedule an appointment with the RISD Alternate Graduation Committee for approval. ‘Tree of Angels’ slated in Cameron Dec. 9.

The 21st annual Tree of Angels ceremony is set at 6 p.m. Dec. 9 at 112 West First in downtown Cameron.

Participants are asked to bring a decorative angel commemorating a loved one lost to violent crime. Members of the military and law enforcement will also be honored.

Angels should be tagged with the first and last names of the person being honored.

Donations can also be made to the Tree of Angels at Buckholts State Bank in Buckholts, Cameron, or Rogers. For information, call the DA’s office at 697-7013.
