Firefighters postpone fundraiser to Aug. 29th

The Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department’s annual fund-raiser has been postponed until Aug. 29.

RVFD continues aiding elderly with shopping

The Rockdale VFD will shop for groceries for residents 75 and over during the COVID-19 crisis.

SW Milam helping out customers on billing

As a result of the COVID-19 situation the Southwest Milam Water Supply Corp. has decided to reduce members water bills by 50 percent on a monthto-month basis.

The change went into effect with the March 25 bills.

Trucker treated after rollover on foggy road

A 27-year-old Killeen resident was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hospital, Temple last Wednesday after his 18-wheeer overturned at a foggy Milano intersection.

DPS Trooper Ernest Del-Bosque said Tavis Thomas was the driver of the truck which crashed during the fog at 7:38 a.m. March 25 at a US 79-Texas 36 intersection.

Damages were termed “extensive.”

No injuries were reported in a 7:15 a.m. Thursday twocar collision on US 79, west of County Road 339.

Drivers were listed as Kyle Goerner of Wortham and Rocky Wilborn of Bullard.

Thorndale City joins in extending ‘disaster’

THORNDALE—City Council members in Thorndale, meeting in special session Friday, have voted to extend the COVID-19 disaster declaration until further notice.

Other Milam municipalities have okayed similar declarations.

Food Pantry changing operating days, hours

In order to “try to ensure the safety of our volunteers and clients, and that our disinfecting supplies last, the RCS Food Pantry is changing operating hours and days,” spokesperson Pam Warren said.

The food pantry will be open on alternate Thursdays only, the 2nd, 4th and 5th (if applicable) Thursdays of the month.

“With the CTFB Mobile Pantry at the KC Hall on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays, we will open the RCS food pantry on those alternate Thursdays to ensure food is available to the community each week. In light of our shortened schedule, we will expand our hours from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.”

The pantry will be open Thursday (March 26), April 9, 23 and 30.

“In a food emergency, contact us at 512-446-5710 to schedule a food pickup. We will respond within 1-2 days,” Warren said.

She said distributions of the “Senior Commodity” box from the RCS Food Pantry are suspended until further notice.

Historical group won’t meet in Friday session

The Milam County Historical Commission will not meet Friday as had been scheduled.

That’s the word from Beth Brooks, commission spokesperson.

USDA doing business now ‘only by phone’

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Service Centers nationwide will continue to conduct business but by phone only, according to the Department, which issued this statement:

“Field work will continue with appropriate social distancing as precautionary measures to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

“While program delivery staff will continue to come into the office, they will be working with producers by phone, and using online tools whenever possible.

“All Service Center visitors wishing to conduct business with USDA’s Farm Service Agency, Natural Resources Conservation Service, or any other Service Center agency are required to call to schedule a phone appointment.”
