Milano native killed in Brazos ATV accident
A 21-year-old Milano native died last Tuesday afternoon in an all-terrain vehicle accident in Brazos County.
According to the Brazos County Sheriff’s Department, Blake Harless was killed about 3:30 p.m. along Millican Creek Trail near FM 2154.
Two other persons on the vehicle sustained injuries.

VFW Post hosting free July Fourth breakfast
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6525 of Rockdale will host a free breakfast from 7 to 10:30 a.m. July 4th at the post home at 978 West US 79.
Commander Larry Rubi-no said the public is welcome to attend.
Menu includes bacon, eggs “SOS” and biscuits, he said.
Trustees okay budget without tax increase
As expected, Rock-dale ISD trustees okayed a 2018-19 budget without a tax increase at Thursday’s June board meeting.
The tax rate, which will be adopted later, was pegged at $1.36, same as the current year.
The RISD had pledged no tax increase, or bond issue, when it began to plan the new football stadium now under construction.
Supt. Dr. Denise Monzingo said during the upcoming school year, decision will need to be made on school bus security with discussions of options.
Also Thursday, Rockdale ISD campuses were recognized for becoming No Place For Hate designated.
County extending pact with ambulance service
Milam County Commissioners have proposed extending the current contact with American Medical Services ambulance service for five years.
County Judge Dave Barkemeyer proposed the agreement, which will have to be endorsed by the Rockdale and Cameron city councils, during Monday’s commissioners session.
RISD band selections continue to advance
Rockdale ISD band selections continue to advance in summer competitions.
Adrian Acevedo, director of bands, said the RHS Big Blue Band was second in Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) march competition and will advance to state and was fourth (state qualifier runner-up) in concert.
Also, the junior-high symphonic band will advance to the state level in Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) competition.
Previously the band had advanced to state in Association of Texas Small School Bands competition.
Other recordings by RHS and RJH bands placed 4th and 8th.
Foot pursuit ended by alert firefighter
A foot pursuit in an east Rockdale neighborhood ended last week when a volunteer firefighter apprehended a fleeing suspect.
Lt. Stephen Goodrich said the chase began when a suspect fled on foot from police.
Police asked for Rock-dale VFD assistance and cordoned off the area.
“He essentially ran right into fireman John Stewart, who detained him,” Goodrich said.
Tyler McLaren Phillips, 23, was charged with evading arrest/detention with previous conviction and possession of a controlled substance (less than one gram).
As of presstime Tuesday, he remained in the Milam County Jail in lieu of $12,000 bond.
