Milano Fourth of July parade, meal canceled

MILANO—There will be no celebration of the “stars and stripes” on the Fourth of July in Milano.

The Milano City Council has canceled the parade and community meal for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic at their meeting on Monday night.

The Milano event is traditionally the only one of its kind in Milam County.

CTFB visit set Thursday at KC Hall parking lot

The first Central Texas Food Bank (CTFB) Mobile Food Pantry distribution of July in the KC Hall parking lot will be held on Thursday, according to Rockdale Christian Services Chair Pam Warren.

Distributions are held the first and third Thursdays of each month. Hours are 9 to 11 a.m.

“As with previous distributions, this will be a drive-through model with the clients remaining in their vehicles to maintain social distancing,” she said.

Volunteer helpers must wear masks.

Warren said there would be no public restrooms available at Thursday’s distribution.

RISD student transfer applications solicited

Parents of students transferring into the Rockdale Independent School District from other school districts are reminded to submit applications for student transfers for the 2020-2021 school year, according to Dr. Denise Monzingo, superintendent. There is no transfer fee.

POSGCD holding rules amendment hearing

MILANO—The Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District (POSGCD) will hold a public hearing on July 14, on the amendment of the POSGCD rules, according to Doug Box, spokesman.

The Board of Directors will consider amending the rules at the board meeting following the public hearing. The amendments consist of changes to Section 1 Definitions and Concepts.

Due to the COVID-19 situation, these meetings may be held virtually, Box said.

South Milam VFDs dispatched on calls

Calls for South Milam County volunteer fire departments during the past week included:

• 6:56 p.m. June 24, Rockdale VFD dispatched to Houston Street for report of smoke coming from neighbor’s house, turned out to be a pile of burning grass.

• 2:06 p.m. Friday, unknown fire on 1600 block of FM 908 North, Rockdale VFD dispatched and reported a controlled burn. • 4:14 a.m. Saturday,

• 4:14 a.m. Saturday, Rockdale VFD dispatched to intersections of Cameron (US 79) and Main and Cameron and Ackerman, traffic signals not operating due to power outage.

• 4:18 a.m. Saturday, Rockdale VFD dispatched to 400 block of Ackerman, transformer shooting sparks over trees.

• 2:49 p.m. Saturday, Rockdale VFD dispatched to 2400 block of Post Oak for possible gas leak.

RCS Food Pantry lists its schedule for July

Here is the July schedule for the Rockdale Christian Services Food Pantry, according to Pam Warren, RCS president:

• July 9-10.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 12-noon.

She said clients can pick up their CSFP commodity boxes any day the pantry is open.

“Distribution will continue as a walk up model,” she said. “Clients are not permitted in the building at this time so as to maximize the safety of our community. In addition, we do not have the volunteer staff to assist clients with placing their food in cars. We do however provide a cart for client use. If you feel you need help getting food to your car, please bring someone along to assist.” Face masks are required

Milam annual row crops tour Thursday

BUCKHOLTS—Milam County’s annual Row Crops Tour is going ahead on schedule Thursday, but there are some significant changes due to the COVID-19 situation, according to County Agent Floyd Ingram.

Ingram said the event will still be face-to-face, but will be shortened, held entirely outdoors and there will be no meal.

He said participants will gather at 7 a.m. Thursday, at Cotton/Sorghum Plots on County Road 118A near Buckholts.

“From Texas 36, turn north on FM 1915 in Buckholts, travel 4.8 miles, turn right (northbound) on CR 118A and look for the Texas AgriLife Extension signs,” he said. “Two CEUs (one IPM, one general) are offered.”
