County continues plan to move Milam offices

CAMERON—Milam County Commissioners, meeting in special session Monday morning in the courthouse, continued their quest to move a number of Milam offices into what was once the town’s hospital.

The court approved notices of intent to nine buildings and two vacant lots in downtown Cameron, owned by the county, for the former Little River-Cameron Hospital.

County Judge Steve Young said the former hospital building will be remodeled into offices while a professional building on the site will become an urgent care facility.

Grant money delegated to the county to be spent for COVID-19 relief will be used to renovate the professional building.

Young said the goal is to have a “one-stop” location where Milam citizens can transact county business.

County offices set to make the move include the county clerk, tax collector, prosecutor, veterans assistance office, constables, Texas AgriLife Extension Service, adult probation, juvenile probation, constables, Bea’s Kitchen, The HOP transportation and others.

Young said the county has applied for a grant which would pay for approximately 80 percent of the renovation, if awarded.

“However, if not awarded the county will pay for the renovation without raising taxes,” Young said.

Also Monday, the court agreed to continue producing teleconferencing meetings of its sessions.
