RVFD fund-raiser now will be online event
The annual Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department Fund-Raiser, traditionally held at the KC Hall every spring has been changed to an online event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fire Chief Ward Roddam said the event will be Aug. 29, beginning at 5 p.m.
“We will post a link to watch the live drawing,” he said.
TxDOT sets fall start for huge sidewalk project
The long-awaited beginning of a major highway-side-walk project in downtown Rockdale is set for this fall.
Bobby Colwell of the Texas Dept, of Transportation said the project includes mill and inlay work along US 79 between Ackerman and Burleson Streets.
He said the project will take about 18 months to complete.
“Motorists should expect some delays, obey traffic control devices and watch for workers and equipment.

Trustees also deal with routine items Monday
The main topic of conversation at Monday’s Rockdale ISD Board of Trustees meeting was, of course, the re-opening of school in this dizzying year. (See story page lA.)
But board members also dealt with more routine matters.
The board appointed trustee Julia Cardona as delegate and Charles Miles as alternate to the Texas Association of School Boards/Texas Association of School Administrators.
Trustees adopted the 2020-21 student code of conduct and student handbook.
Chief Financial Officer Genella Korenek reported tax collection for 2019-2020 is at 98 percent.
Meeting was held in the junior-high commons.
RCS Food Pantry open two more days in July
The Rockdale Christian Services Food Pantry, 224 West Cameron (US 79), will be open two more days this month.
Pam Warren, RCS president, said the pantry will be open Thursday (July 23) and Friday, July 24.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 12-noon. “Commodity boxes may be picked up either day,” Warren said.
