Raises, extra Rockdale tax office hours, new employees in budget
Body

CAMERON—It appears there will not be a county tax increase from the current 73-cent rate in the 2020 budget, even though some salary increases will be proposed.

“Things are looking up,” Milam County Judge Steve Young said, after Monday’s final budget workshop.

He said the current budget was hit hard by the loss of Luminant from the tax rolls, and cuts were made including a 2.5-percent cut for each precinct.

Young said the increased land prices have raised taxable values (see story page 6A) and it is proposed each precinct will get that 2.5-percent back, allowing commissi0ners to “hire help and/or buy needed materials to maintain roads.

Young said one new full-time and one new part-time employee will he hired by the Milam County Tax Office.

“This should enable them to keep the Rockdale office open more often,” he said.

Young said a new part-time employee in the district clerk’s office is also envisioned.

The judge said all county employees will received four percent pay increases, the “most significant in some time.”

“Some deputies in the sheriff’s department will get more than a four-percent raise, in order to make Milam County more competitive with Williamson and Bell Counties,” he said.

Plans call for an additional $2,500 stipend for each of the county’s volunteer fire departments, he said.

“The Milam County Historical Commission will receive a slight increase and additional money has been set aside for the new courthouse security officer,” he said.
