There was no damage to Rockdale Elementary School in what turned out to be a smoke scare call at 6:36 a.m. Monday.

Police received a call that smoke was coming from the school’s roof and sent the RVFD to the scene.

Fire Chief Ward Roddam said firefighters determined the cause of the smoke was a “partially burned, and not fully extinguished cloth rag that had been placed into a plastic bag, and thrown into a garbage can.”

“This action was determined to have been accidental. There was no damage in any form to the school,” he said.

• 12:05 p.m. Thursday, grass fire, CR 374, Milano VFD.

• 4:47 p.m. Saturday, hay baler on fire, CR 381, Rockdale and Milano VFDs.

• 11:53 p.m. Saturday, sparking transformer, 600 block of Williams, Rockdale VFD.

• 10:22 a.m. Monday, grass fire, 10,000 block of North FM 486, Rockdale VFD.

CTFB visit set Thursday at KC Hall parking lot

The final Central Texas Food Bank (CTFB) Mobile Food Pantry distribution of June in the KC Hall parking lot will be held on Thursday, according to Rockdale Christian Services Chair Pam Warren.

Distributions are held the first and third Thursdays of each month. Hours are 9 to 11 a.m.

“As with previous distributions, this will be a drive-through model with the clients remaining in their vehicles to maintain social distancing,” she said.

Bulk waste collection Saturday in Thorndale

THORNDALE—The City of Thorndale’s trash contractor, Waste Connections of Texas, will hold a bulk waste pickup day for customers from 8 a.m. to 12-noon Saturday.

Items including old furniture, mattresses and household appliances may be placed at the curb for pickup. Items must not weigh more than 50 pounds.

Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners must be tagged to certify coolant removal.

Tires, paint, items with liquids or any loose items/ debris not bagged, tied or bundled will not be collected.

Cameron site for 2020 4th of July fireworks

Yes it’s still on.

The annual Fourth of July fireworks display, held by the Rockdale and Cameron Chambers of Commerce will be held at dusk Saturday, July 4, on the square in downtown Cameron.

The display rotates annually between Rockdale and Cameron.

Social distancing will be in effect and no other activities will be held in downtown Cameron during the day.

Brookshire Bros. helps victims of COVID-19

Brookshire Bros. customers may donate $1, $3 or $5 at registers to assist victims of the COVID-19 virus, and the super market chain will match every dollar donated by customers, up to $100,000.

Money will go to local non-profit agencies or food pantries which perform hunger relief.

Nominations taken for vacant POSGCD seat

There is a vacancy on the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation Board of Directors due to the resignation of Chris Whittaker, who has moved from the county.

Whittaker, who was Rockdale City Manager was named permanent city manager in Angleton last week. He left Rockdale to become interim city manager, expecting the position to be made permanent.

Milam County Commissioners Court will accept applications through close of business July 24.

Minerva VFD begins food pantry service

The Minerva Volunteer Fire Department now has a food pantry in front of the Minerva Fire Station.

Chief Ernie Glenn said pantry cabinets are full of canned goods and other staples with those in need asked to “come get items they may need.” No perishables are kept in the cabinets.

Milam DA leads probe of Williamson judge

Milam County District Attorney Bill Torrey has been selected to lead an investigation into Williamson County Judge Bill Gravell.

District Judge David Peeples signed an order authorizing Torrey to investigate allegations that Gravell violated his own stay-at-home orders. There are also allegations of official oppression and abuse of official capacity.

It is alleged that Gravell attended his grandson’s April 7 birthday party, after issuing a stay-at-home order, wore county firefighter equipment and was driven to the party by a deputy sheriff.
