Iremember years ago discussing communion crackers (life of a pastor). We had been using the soft crackers that tasted a lot like Styrofoam, they kind of melted in your mouth. I think there was a general consensus that crisp crackers are best.
As this random subject was brought up in a Bible study a woman confessed, she was the one that purchased the crackers. It was funny and no one was criticizing her per se, but it was interesting that at the end of the infamous cracker purchase was a person, a real human with feelings and everything. So it is with every complaint you make.
When we gripe at McDonald’s because they failed at getting our order right, there is a person on the other end of that complaint, somebody that I think is probably doing their best and believe it or not they are not out to get you.
My first real job was at a fried chicken place some might remember, Parsley’s Pullet Parlor. I’m sure I messed up some orders, but I can promise you it was not intentional. I was just a real person, learning how to work with customers (count change, take orders), co-workers and I was learning the difference between a chicken breast and a thigh (back then chicken came with bones). This was a lot for a 15-year-old boy who was not even shaving yet.
I read somewhere that we are supposed to control our tongues (James 1:26) and if you can’t then you are really not much of a Christian. I also read that we can’t praise the Lord with the same tongue that we cuss the fast-food employee with, that fresh water and salt water don’t come out of the same faucet (James 3:9, 11).
To be honest I think when McDonald’s gets your order right we should fall down and worship the Lord. I mean really, what are the chances (no offense if you work at the Golden Arches)! I don’t mean for this to be political but with minimum wage you might get the minimum - that doesn’t mean there is a conspiracy against you between the squawk box and the drive-thru window it just means you might be getting what you paid for - or not getting what you didn’t pay for if that makes sense.
My point is we need to start humanizing things rather than dehumanizing and demonizing. Dr. Seuss told us, “A person’s a person, no matter how small.” Philippians 2:14 tells us, “Do all things without grumbling…” That includes taking the Lord’s Supper (communion) and ordering a Filet-O-Fish.
