It’s obvious scammers didn’t make any New Year’s resolutions to forsake plying their dishonest trades in 2019.

During the past week, Milam County residents have reported phony telephone calls claiming to be from both local law enforcement and fire departments.

Such calls are not true, never have been true and won’t ever be true in Milam County, according to authorities.

Sheriff Chris White said a scam was reported last week in which a caller stated he was Deputy Sheriff Mike Clore. “He was not,” White said.

The caller threatens he will get a warrant for failure to appear for a jury summons and the scam target must pay a fine “over the phone” to avoid arrest.

“No deputy will ever call you about a fine in this manner. Deputies will also never demand a payment over the phone,” White said.

Early this week, Cameron Volunteer Fire Department Chief Henry Horelica said someone is calling, stating that they represent the Cameron VFD, and asking for money.

Both Horelica and Rockdale VFD Chief Ward Roddam emphasized no one from either department will ever call persons and ask them to make donations.

White, Horelica and Roddam said persons getting such calls should never share any financial or personal information. Best action is to hang up immediately, they said.
