Sara Sanders, the Thorndale ISD nurse, told the board at the Jan. 13 meeting that there has been an increase in student cases of COVID-19 in recent days. She also said that the county had asked for a list of staff members that would like to get the vaccine.
Earlier, Thorndale High School juniors and seniors voted to have the prom next month, rather than wait until May.
High school principal Jennifer Parnham told the board that the students were surveyed to see if they would prefer to have the prom in February with mask rules in place, or wait until May. They voted for Feb. 13. Parnham said that the prom contract would include COVID requirements which will include temperature checks at the door and prepackaged snacks and drinks.
The board also learned from the business manager that because of increased enrollment, the district could have $200,000 in extra revenue this year.
Board member Kimberly Biar also pointed out that even through the COVID-19 pandemic, attendance has remained excellent through the first semester.
Superintendent Adam Ivy said that he was working with the district architect to design some potential safety renovations at the High School campus.
Ivy also addressed the selection of roofing and HVAC vendors for the upcoming project on the high school gym roof. He recommended, based upon value and the prior service, that the board approve a roofing contract with Parson’s roofing and an HVAC contract with Climate Control to perform the work.
Ivy said the district obtained multiple quotes and that the roofing contract would be done through a purchasing cooperative.
He added that he was able to secure a 5 percent discount on the remainder of the needed roofing projects that will need to be done in the near future along with a complimentary maintenance contract for all of the roofing in the district.
The board will next meet Feb. 15 at 6:30 p.m.
