At a packed house in the Rockdale High School auditorium on Monday, RHS senior Tatiana Olivares was inducted into the United States Naval Academy Preparatory School.

Olivares was presented the Certificate of Accomplishment by District 17 Congressman Pete Sessions and she will start boot camp after high school graduation in May.

Sessions told the audience, “You can get anywhere you want to go from Milam County and all of Tatiana’s hard work in getting into the academy is the height of patriotism for an 18-yearold.”

Olivares told the audience in her acceptance speech that she has wanted to be in the military since she was eight years old. “My family went to Corpus Christi to see Selena perform, but it was seeing the USS Lexington that changed my life. I knew I wanted to be on a ship every day.”

She has a great foundation in her aunt and uncle, Navy Staff Sgt. (ret.) Leticia Ruelas Plaza and CW3 (ret.) Alex Plaza, who encouraged her and told her how much hard work would be involved.

Olivares is also enrolled in Temple College and will graduate from there in May with an undergraduate degree that she accomplished while in high school.

Tatiana is the daughter of Jose and Esmeralda Olivares.
