Lack of support cancels Milano Jamboree effort

MILANO—The monthly Milano Junction Country Jamboree have been canceled until further notice.

“We are sorry to announce this,” spokesperson Jane Friedrichs said. “It is due to lack of support by the general public and not being able to find musicians to play with the band.”

“The Milano Senior Citizens appreciate the support of all over the past 50-plus years,” she said.

2nd-4th Sunday washer tourneys benefit ACS

Washer tournaments benefiting the American Cancer Society will be held each second and fourth Sunday of the month beginning at 5 p.m. at the Apache Pass Ice House.

Tourneys will be held through September.

Registration will start at 4 p.m. and fee is $20 per team, double elimination. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third-place teams.

Reading club’s scholarship forms

Application forms for the Thursday Reading Club’s Bootsie Peebles Memorial Scholarship are available to high school seniors and adults in the community pursuing medical training and may be picked up at The Rockdale Reporter or high school counselor offices in Rockdale, Thorndale and Milano.

Milam EEA set to meet May 7th in Branchville

BRANCHVILLE—Milam County Extension Education Association will meet at 10 a.m. May 7 at Branchville Baptist Church.

Branchville EEA will host the meeting.

Activities include a business meeting, craft program, fellowship and lunch.

In partnership with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Milam Clubs include the New Salem, Branchville and Friendly Progressive EEAs.

New members are welcome.

Matinee Musical Club meets at Walker home

The Matinee Musical Club held met at the home of Gloria Walker with co-host Pam Graham.

Four members and two guests were in attendance. Melinda Perez, who was a band student at Rockdale ISD and is now in the band at Sam Houston State, was chosen to perform in Europe. The club gave $100 towards the cost of her trip.

President Annette Griesbach gave a report on the state convention.

The Music Club will host the First Friday Coffee at the Library on May 4.

It will also sponsor the movie Mary Poppins at the Kay Theatre at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 6.

The May Meeting will be held May 14 at the home of Mona Butala and Carl Hughes.

It was suggested to host another “Ukefest” with a possible August date. Scholarship application forms have been given to the school counselors and are due by May 4.

Performers included Butala, Leah and Sparky Thomason performed and members from the Presbyterian Choir Song.

Master Gardeners host Earth Day activities

El Camino Real Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist program shared Earth Day information with the public Saturday at The Community room downtown.

Volunteers Master Naturalists were joined by Todnechia Mitchell and Tyler Lawson, representatives from the USDA office in Cameron, and by Sean Wall, author of The Cycles of Foraging – A Book of Days.

The Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District donated materials and tote bags.

There was also face painting by Phyllis Shuffield and Dorothy Mayer; a butterfly coloring and crafts area staffed by Barbara Paschall, Darlene (Anglen) Reynolds, and Tina Foster; a place to learn about and pledge to save water led by Mike and Joyce Conner; and a nature tree display with hand-made ornaments made by Cathy Johnson and daughter Rosie, aided by Liz Lewis.

Other tables included Master Naturalist program (Sherry Colley), ways to Take Care of Texas (Lisa Milewski), how to landscape for wildlife (Donna Lewis and Debbi Harris) and “Our Pollinator Friends” (Larry Kocian).

Jen Coleman (a Master Gardener) spoke at length on KRXT with chapter president Phyllis Shuffield and vice-president and Earth Day Coordinator Donna Lewis. Sue Ann Kendall also served as media coverage.— Joyce Conner, spokesperson.

Crown Garden Club sees Wildflower Center

The Crown Garden Club’s April meeting was a field trip to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin.

Members participating in the tour and luncheon were Jimette Fatheree, Barbara Nelson, Barbara Valek, Michelle Fletcher, Diana Sousares and Betty Bartlett.
