Music club awards scholarship, enjoys songs about ‘home’

Matinee Musical Club met May 14 at First Presbyterian Church with Donnie Rinn and Mona Butala hostesses. Members brought salads and desserts to share.

President Annette Griesbach welcomed 15 members. After reciting the collect, member sang the song-of-the-month, “My Old Kentucky Home.” Minutes and treasurer’s report were given by Pam Graham and Gloria Walker.

Success of the club-sponsored National Music Week was noted, including Friday morning coffee at the city library, reading at Storytime, singing at the Senior Center and The Renaissance, showing of the movie, Mary Poppins, and congregations singing the Music Week song at local churches.

Scholarship—The scholarship committee announced Zach Stockton as winner of the club’s yearly scholarship.

Dates announced: District 4 meeting June 9, Waco; TFMC board meeting Aug. 15, Dallas; Opera in the Ozarks, Fools in Love, June 22-July 26, Eureka Springs.

Events—The club will again have a Dessert-of-the-Month fund-raiser, selling tickets in October with deliveries in November. The club will sponsor a “Ukefest” Aug. 26 at the Kay Theater.

Program—The program was led by Mary Jane Boyd with the theme, “Music Takes You Home.” After she gave a background of each song, it was performed by members: “Sentimental Journey,” Tami Stockton and Sparky Thomason; “Flying Home,” Sparky Thomason; “Rocky Top,” Pat Owen; “Take Me Home Country Roads,” Pam Graham; “Home on the Range”, “Show Me the Way to go Home” and “God Bless America,” sung by all members.

The meeting closed with the NFMC Benediction, “The Gift of Song.” MMC is a member of the Texas and National Federation of Music Clubs.—Pam Graham, secretary.

Farm technology topic for Crown Gardeners

The May meeting of Crown Garden Club was hosted by Patricia McKee and Diana Sousares at the McKee home. Ms. McKee gave a two-part program on the ancient art of heirloom seed saving and “country farming meets technology in 2018.”

Some of this technology includes methods of planting and gathering strawberries, corn and other edibles using modern vehicles.

The hostesses served a variety of snacks and desserts to the 12 members present. Door prizes were won by Jimette Fatheree, Renee Pounders and Peggy Cooke.

The June meeting will be a lunch out and fellowship.—Peggy Cooke, reporter

2nd-4th Sunday washer tourneys benefit ACS

Washer tournaments benefiting the American Cancer Society are being held each second and fourth Sunday of the month beginning at 5 p.m. at the Apache Pass Ice House.

Tourneys will be held through September.

Registration starts at 4 p.m. and fee is $20 per team, double elimination. Prizes are awarded to first, second and third-place teams.

T-SHIRTS—Orders for gray or black T-shirts, also benefiting the ACS, are now being taken. Prices are $15 for short sleeve (district brand) and $20 for long-sleeve (port and company performance brand). Sizes are available from small to 6XL.
