Matinee Musical Club April meeting notes

The April meeting of the Matinee Musical Club was held at the home of Annette Griesbach with Mona Butala as co-hostess. President Lisa Loewe welcomed nine members and two guests.

Business was attended to covering the reading and approval of the minutes and treasurer’s report. President Loewe reminded the membership that the District IV annual meeting is set for April 30 and hosted by the Navasota Study Music Club. Three MMC members plan to travel to Navasota to attend.

In preparation for the celebration of National Music Week which is always held the first full week of May, Vice President Mona Butala attended the April City Council meeting at which time Mayor John King proclaimed May 1-8, 2022 as National Music Week with the Theme: “Music…is Inspiring”.

To further promote NMW, the Music Club voted to monetarily support the “Jazz and Derby Party” on Saturday May 7 which is part of a Music Series benefiting the Vision Historic Preservation Foundation’s Restoration of The 1895 and will feature one of MMC’s members, Sparky Thomason and his Jazz Quartet, the talented Christian Wiggs, and local rising star Brooke Graham.

The musical portion of the April meeting is set aside to feature Jazz. Our resident Jazz professional/member Sparky Thomason presented the evening’s program on Jacob Collier. With the use of YouTube videos, Sparky demonstrated the talents of this now 27-year-old musical genius. Collier is a one-man jazz group; has a four and a half octave vocal range, as well as mastering all the accompanying instruments of guitars, bass, drums, piano and more; plus does the musical arrangements, and the videos of himself. We were all wowed by this young talented jazz artist.

The meeting was closed with the singing of the National Federation of Music Club’s (NFMC) Benediction Song

Matinee Musical Club is a member of the Texas and National Federation of Music Clubs.
