Tomato Clubs topic of Crown Garden meeting
The history of the first girl’s Tomato Club was the program of the Crown Garden Club’s June meeting, which was at the home of Diana Sousares with Patricia McKee co-hostess.
Former Milam County Extension Agent, Cheryl E. Walker of Milano spoke about how important it was in the early 1900s to acquaint young women in rural areas like Milam County with tomato production and canning techniques.
She said, Edna Westbrook Trigg, who was principal of a school near Milano (Liberty), was asked by the United States Department of Agriculture to supervise these clubs and she organized eleven throughout the county. In 1912 her clubs showed canned products at the Milano Fair, the state’s first exhibit of this kind.
The next year, they also showed at the Rockdale Fair and the State Fair in Dallas. In 1913-14, she worked in Milam and Childress counties and in 1916 she became the first county home demonstration agent in Texas. These Tomato Clubs were forerunners of the popular 4-H clubs.
In the business session, plans were made for a pre-Christmas trip to the Dallas Arboretum and voted to provide a donation to the MARC Center to buy plants for the recent upgrade of the raised beds there by the county Master Gardeners. Patsy David and Nancy Marburger won door prizes.
July and August club meetings were suspended. The September meeting will be hosted by David, Marburger and Jimette Fatheree. —Peggy Cooke, reporter
