Cemetery group sets business meeting

Murray Cemetery Association annual business meeting will be held Saturday, Sept. 21 from 10-11 a.m. at the Perry Community Room, 109 N. Main, Rockdale.

An appetizer social will follow. Plates, napkins, utensils, cups, ice, and beverages will be provided by the association and members can bring their favorite appetizer to share.

Genelogy society’s to meet next week

The Milam County Genealogical Society will meet Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church, 1600 Alcoa, Rockdale.

The new handicap access entrance to the church is adjacent to the Palmer Street entrance to their parking lot.

Linda Whorton is in charge of the program.

Members with surnames beginning with P through Z will be in charge of refreshments. Ice, drinks and paper goods will be provided. All members are encouraged to attend. Visitors are always welcomed, said Whorton, publicity director.

New caregivers group to meet

Caregivers Support Group meets Thursday, Aug. 29 at St. Joseph’s education classroom, 234 San Gabriel in Rockdale.

The group, which has been meeting for last three months, will meet the last Thursday of every month.

Alcoa retirees slate meeting for Sept. 12

THORNDALE—The next meeting of Rockdale Alcoa Retirees will be Thursday, Sept. 12, at the Thorndale VFW Hall, according to Doug Williams, organization president.

He said doors will open at 5 p.m. with a short business meeting starting around 5:45.

“The meal will be chicken fried steak,” he said. “Dessert group will be those with last names beginning with M through Z.”

Public can help preserve history

To help preserve the history of the town’s heritage, a local group is seeking stories, photos, press clippings, furniture about the old police station/city hall building.

Geri Burnett, the Save the Old City Hall (STOCH) group spokesperson, said the group “requests and encourages” anyone with photos and/or memories of the building to contact her at 512-446-5057. The group’s aim is preserve the cultural resources of the city of Rock-dale.

“STOCH would like to collect the memories and share them at a later date,” she said.

Historic trail group to meet in Milam

The 41-county trail association El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail (ELCAT) will hold its annual meeting at Apache Pass in Milam County Oct. 11-12.

Special events are being planned for member participants for Oct. 12, according to Steven Gonzales, executive director of the Trail. A bus tour of Apache Pass and the surrounding area is one event planned.

Soil nutrient class helps local farmers

Certification of Nutrient Management Planners short course is scheduled for Aug. 27-29.

The three-day course is will be at the USDA Southern Plains Agricultural Research Center at Texas A&M, 2881 F&B Road, College Station.

Cost for the course is for $400. The class will cover: soil nutrient dynamics; managing fertilizers, animal manures and biosolids for land application; soil sampling, testing and interpretation and tools for calculating and developing nutrient management plans.
