Alcoa Retirees to meet Thursday in Thorndale
Rockdale Alcoa Retirees will meet Thursday, Sept. 13 in the Thorndale VFW Hall, next door to the Thorndale Fireman’s Hall on FM 486 North, according to Doug Williams, spokesman.
Doors will open at 5 p.m. A business meeting will be at 5:45 and the meal at 6 p.m., he said.
Dessert will be provided by members whose last names begin with A through L.
“There will not be a silent auction held at this meeting,” Williams added.
Minerva Community
Center meeting Sept. 25
The Minerva Community
Center annual meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept.25 in the Center.
“If you are a part of the Minerva community, or have ties to it, please attend,” said Deborah Dean, spokesperson. “In addition to electing a new trustee, we will discuss repairs/maintenance, plans for the annual homecoming, building rental and other new business.”

HOMECOMING—The 58th annual Minerva Homecoming and Community Gathering will be held at noon Sunday, Oct. 7 at the Minerva Community Center, 378 CR 232 Loop.
“Bring your family and friends to enjoy a covered dish lunch while visiting with friends, family and neighbors,” said Deborah Dean, spokesperson. “Bring photos and memories to share.”
A brief Minerva-Midway Cemetery meeting will be held.

Reading club luncheon held to start new year
Thursday Reading Club members opened the 2018-2019 year with a luncheon Sept. 6, a casual indoor picnic at the home of Linda Wilson. Co-hostesses were Annette Stone and Wendie Upson, all members of the yearbook committee.
Yearbooks were distributed and programs announced for the year. Theme is “Our Great American Read,” and selections are taken from the PBS listing of 100 books from great American literature.
Officers for the new year are Geri Burnett, president; Lucile Estell, vice-president; Lynn Young, secretary; Annette Stone, treasurer; Peggy Cooke, reporter.
Mrs. Burnett led a business meeting. Members answered roll call by naming books they have read and would/would not recommend. This is a popular club activity at each meeting.
The October meeting will be hosted by Joan Ratliff with Lucile Estell giving a review of “Anne of Green Gables,” by Lucy Maud Montgomery. —Peggy Cooke, reporter
Free Thanksgiving meal set Nov. 10 at Thorndale
THORNDALE—A free Community Thanksgiving Meal will be served from11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Thorn-dale Fireman’s Hall.

Murray Cemetery group sets Saturday meeting
The Murray Cemetery Association will hold its 14th annual meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Rockdale General Store community room, 1201 West US 79.
Officers for the next two years will be elected and a pot luck luncheon will follow.
Those attending should bring a favorite dish. Iced tea, coffee, water, bread, ice, plates and utensils will be furnished.

Cameron VFD to host
dance September 29
CAMERON—Cameron Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2010 will host a dance with Bobby Flores and The Yellow Rose Band at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29.

Washer tournaments benefiting the American Cancer Society are held at 5 p.m. each second and fourth Sunday at the Apache Pass Ice House. Tourneys will be held through September. Registration is at 4 p.m., $20 per team, double elimination. Prizes go to top three teams.
