Garden club slates trip to Dallas in December

The Crown Garden Club meeting for September was at the home of club president Jimmette Fatheree with Patsy David and Nancy Marburger serving as co-hostesses. They served a taco salad luncheon with all the trimmings, chocolate cake and pumpkin cake.

Master Gardener Michelle Fletcher reported on the donation the club gave for plants for the raised beds at the MARC Center. She said master gardeners and junior master gardeners had cleaned debris from the beds and helped with planting the new plants and they were coming up for the fall garden. A thank you note was received from the MARC Center.

It was decided that a club historian was needed and Betty Bartlett, club secretary, volunteered to add that to her other duties.

Barbara Nelson gave details for the trip to the Dallas Arboretum in December. The club will rent a bus to drive club members and guests to the Arboretum to see the annual display of Christmas decorations.

A discussion was held on continuing to keep up the beds planted at the Old City Cemetery and the club members will take turns to keep the plants watered and cared for. The club thanked Roberta Pounders for all the work she has already done with the beds.

Mrs. Fatheree and Mrs. Marburger gave a program on the Mesquite trees that cover a large portion of uncleared land in Texas. After telling of all the many things the wood and other parts of the trees are used for, Fatheree passed around a container of mesquite flour and some of the beans from the trees. She gave each one present a box containing cookies and some mesquite jelly she made using the mesquite flour and beans.

Door prizes were won by Patricia McKee, Diana Sousares and Bartlett and birthday gifts were given to Fletcher, Nelson and Geri Burnett.

The October meeting will be a field trip which is still in the planning stages.—
