After a long layoff, the Rockdale Park Board met in City Council chambers July 15 and authorized member Michelle Larkin to seek grants to apply for which would help pay for some of the things the board would like to see done at the city’s parks.

One of these is funding for a stage at Bridge Park for which bids have already been sent out.

Member Brett Boren said he would like to see hike and bike trails winding through the parks.

Bridge Park and Skate Park were mentioned as prime locations for such trails that would give kids a place off the street to ride bikes and adults a place for leisurely walks.

Jerald Brunson, the city’s public works director, told the board that the city pool, which is operated by the YMCA, is going to need to be refurbished at some point and that would be a major expense.

City Manager Barbara Holly said that the Y is doing a good job with programs and activities at the pool at Veterans Park.

Alyssa Benford-Roberts gave an update on the work that was done last year at Veterans Park. The board has not met since Jan. 16, 2020. She reminded everyone that memorial markers have been put in place as well as benches.

“It took everybody to get that together,” she said, noting that the city had done a good job in making a place for the monuments and laying the sidewalk, and the fact that Rockdale Memorial donated the fifth service marker to the effort.

The board also reelected Benford-Roberts as vice chairwoman and returned L.C. Richards to the chairmanship.

Brunson told board members that the primary circuit board that controls the water flow at the new Sumuel Park splash pad was not operating and has not yet been repaired.

But members of his department are monitoring the water quality daily and turning the water to the facility on and off daily, also.

The new executive director of the Rockdale Municipal Development District spoke to the board.

He told members he wants to take a look at all the parks to study the different features of them and develop a comprehensive master parks plan at some point.

Holly also said that the city was still preparing the deed for the transferring of the ownership of Fair Park from the city to the Fair Park Association.

Rockdale voters approved that move in the election in November.
