Thomas Harris, the longest serving chief of police in Rockdale history, will retire at the end of May.

The City of Rockdale is conducting interviews with three finalists for the position on Saturday and hopes to have Harris’s successor on board by June 1st.

A feature story on Harris will appear in next week’s Reporter.

Harris, a former deputy sheriff, became police chief in 2000.

He presided over an era which saw Rockdale build what was essentially it first new police station ever. That new station, on the corner of Green and East Cameron (US 79), opened last year.

Prior to that time, the police department had been in the old City Hall building, constructed in 1895 on the corner of Cameron Avenue (well before it became US 79) and Burleson Street.

Harris presides over a police force of 11 sworn officers and six civilians.

City Secretary Terry Blanchard said the field of candidates to replace Harris has been reduced to three, who will be interviewed Saturday but no action will be taken.
