Date for the 2018 Milam and Burleson Counties Groundwater Summit has been set for Aug. 15.
Hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Caldwell Civic Center. All are encouraged to attend, according to the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District, which hosts the annual event.
The summit is free and open to the public with lunch provided. Topics for this year’s summit cover a variety of issues.
TOPICS—Speakers will discuss the characteristics and capacities of the Carrizo-Wilcox aquifer, and an overview of the new Post Oak Savannah Aquifer Conservancy Program (PACP).
In addition, there will be presentations about the new Groundwater Availability Models (GAMs) and how they are developed and used, an overview of hydraulic fracturing, an introduction to Post Oak Savannah’s new Rainwater Harvesting and other programs, and an update on the POSGCD well-monitoring system.
The POSGCD says citizens of Milam and Burleson Counties, as well as surrounding areas, can benefit from attending the Groundwater Summit.
Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District organizes the event and invites groundwater experts from across Texas to come speak at the local level.
“It is a great opportunity for people to come and learn about the state’s requirements on local groundwater management and stay up-to-date on current groundwater issues, such as property rights and groundwater management,” Doug Box, POSGCD spokesman said.
MACE—Robert Mace, one of the speakers at the summit, will share the hydrogeologic story of the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer and what makes it one of the most productive groundwater formations in Texas.
Listeners will get an understanding of the fundamental geologic history of the area and how the aquifer developed over deep time.
According to Mace: “Old mountains, new mountains, dinosaur-killing asteroids, and beach sands from Carrizo Springs to Carthage make up the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer.”
Robert Mace is the deputy executive director of The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment and a Professor of Practice in the Department of Geography at Texas State University.
Mace has over 30 years of experience in hydrology, hydrogeology, stakeholder processes, and water policy, mostly in Texas.
YOUNG—Steve Young is a Principal Geoscientist with INTERA Inc in Austin.
He holds advanced degrees from Stanford University and the University of Waterloo.
Dr. Young has worked for over 20 GCDs and currently serves as Post Oak Savannah GCD hydrogeologist.
Dr. Young is a professional engineer and professional geoscientist.
He is also a board member of the Texas Desalination Association and a member of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation Water Well Drillers Advisory Council.
He will share the update to the Carrizo-Wilcox Availability Model (GAM). “If you have a strong interest in groundwater and the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer, you don’t want to miss Steve’s presentation,” Box said.

POSGCD— Box said the mission of the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District is to strategically manage the groundwater resources of Burleson and Milam counties in order to protect against aquifer depletion and pollution and to ensure an adequate water supply for future generations.
“Through responsible management, we will accomplish this undertaking of preservation by collecting data, monitoring groundwater levels, regulating excessive production, permitting, educating the public and coordinating with neighboring districts for mutual benefit, “ he said.
“Groundwater conservation districts are the state’s preferred method of groundwater management, according to the Texas Water Code (Section 36.0015). More information is available at www.posgcd.org,” Box said.
