Permits for two colossal projects—the new Tiger Stadium and an 84-bed nursing home—rocketed 2018 to second place all-time for construction in Rockdale.

The 2018 total was $11,374,309, second only to $30,877,029 in 2008.

That’s the year permits were issued for a new intermediate school, expansion-renovation of the high school and other Rockdale ISD projects.

In May, Built Wright construction took out a $5,090,413 permit for the new football field, a project which also included a new field house and reorientation of the softball field.

That project is complete.

The $5,580,000 permit for the new Rockdale Housing and Rehabilitation Nursing was issued in July to The Antlers Corporation.

It’s located between Rockdale Intermediate School and US 79.

The slab has been poured and more activity is planned after the City of Rockdale works out power issues to a lift station which will help provide wastewater service.

Those two projects made up 95 percent of the 2018 building permit total.

There was one new home start in 2018, the same as in 2017.

What about the new police station, now nearing completion at the corner of Green and Cameron (US 79)?

Its $3.5-million permit was issued in November, 2017, and was included in that year’s total.

Permits are issued at City Hall and reflect construction inside the city limits.
