The Region G Regional Water Planning Group (Brazos G) will hold a public hearing on the 2026 Initially Prepared Plan (IPP) on Tuesday, May 6, at 10 a.m. at the Brazos River Authority’s Central Office, located at 4600 Cobbs Drive in Waco.
The hearing is an opportunity for residents, landowners and local officials to provide input on the draft plan, which outlines projected water needs and strategies for the next 50 years across the Brazos G region which includes Burleson and Milam counties.
An IPP is a draft version of the regional water plan. It is created every five years by the regional planning groups evaluate how much water our region will need over the next 50 years and how we plan to meet those needs. It includes water demand projections through 2080, identifies shortages and proposes strategies to counter them, and local planning and supply projects.
Burleson County information can be found in Section 5.4 of the plan. As an overview, most water providers, including the City of Caldwell and local water supply corporations are expected to meet future demands through 2080.
Shortages are projected for manufacturing (28– 56 acre feet/year) and mining (3,551 acre feet/year). Recommended strategies include water conservation and groundwater development in the Sparta and Queen City aquifers.
Milam County information can be found in Section 5.25 of the plan. Cities such as Cameron, Milano and WSCs are projected to have sufficient water supplies. Shortages are projected for the City of Rockdale by 2080, City of Thorndale beginning in 2030, mining users (768 acre feet/year) and other larger potential shortages starting in 2040.
Strategies to meet the other demand shortages include developing groundwater from the Carrizo-Wilcox and Queen City aquifers and regional conservation efforts.
Residents of Burleson and Milam counties are encouraged to review the draft plan and submit written comments by July 7, 2025. The IPP is available online at www.brazosgwater. org, at the Brazos River Authority Central Office, and at the Burleson and Milam County Clerk’s Offices.
