This year’s nontraditional Rockdale Fair Queen Pageant will really be nontraditional. It has been moved to Thorndale Fireman’s Hall.

Tamra Vance of the pageant committee said the pageant has drawn 23 contestants and needs a larger venue than the Kay Theatre, which had been listed as the site of the Oct. 10 event.

Contestants won’t be selling fair tickets in 2020 because there won’t be a midway or most of the other activities associated with the annual event, including rodeo performances and dances.

Also the audience will be limited to four guests for each of the contestants, according to Vance.

There are plans to have the pageant available for streaming once the details are worked out, Vance said.

The pageant this year was open to girls in the ninth and tenth grades; in the past it was only open to high school juniors and seniors.

Emcee will be Whitley Boyd, 2019 winner. Before the pageant contestants will meet for individual interviews.

The night of the pageant there will be western wear and evening gown competitions leading up to naming the two runners-up and the new queen.
