THORNDALE—A rabid bat was found Friday at a Thorndale business but Thorndale police say there’s no known contact between the bat and any human or animal.

Thorndale Police Chief Martin Jackson said the bat was found in the 100 block of South Main around 9 a.m.

“It is unknown how long the bat was located near this area,” Jackson said.

The Thorndale Police Department impounded the animal and submitted it for testing at the Department of State Health Services where it tested positive for rabies, according to Jackson.

He said anyone with known contact with the bat should call the Thorndale Police Department through the Milam County Sheriff’s Office at 254-697-7033 immediately.

INSTRUCTIONS—Jackson said anyone who had contact with this bat should see their physicians as soon as possible to discuss the need for post-exposure rabies vaccinations. Additionally, they should contact the Texas Department of State Health Services Zoonosis Control Program (254) 778-6744, to report their potential exposures.

A rabies exposure is defined as an animal bite which breaks the skin or exposure of broken skin or mucous membranes to saliva or cerebrospinal fluid.

If pets had face-to-face contact with or were bitten by the bat, additional rabies vaccinations for pets may be warranted. Call a veterinarian Zoonosis Control Program.

On May 5, a rabid bat was found on Thorndale ISD property in a custodial area near the ag shop.

In that incident also, no contact was reported between the bat and any human or pet.
