CAMERON—A 53-year old Rockdale man received a 12-year prison term in 20th District Court Thursday, after he was found guilty of sexual assault in a jury trial last month.

District Judge John Youngblood handed down the sentence to Ricky Lee Murray, who was convicted June 21.

It took the jury less than an hour to reach its verdict after hearing testimony in the three-day trial.

Murray will also be required to register as a sex offender for life as part of the sentence..

MEDICATION—Brian Price, assistant district attorney who prosecuted the case, told The Reporter the victim was a resident of the Rock-dale Mobile Home Park on East Cameron (US 79) at the time of the March, 2017 incident.

“She had been having some pretty serious back and neck pain,” Price said. “As a result she had taken some medication.”

Price said the victim was in the mobile home when the incident occurred. “We were able to show that she was in a ‘medicated state’ and was unable to adequately combat the defendant,” he said.

Price said the victim went to Little River-Rockdale Hospital emergency room for medical treatment.

SUICIDE—“After a couple of days she began to remember what had happened,” Price said.

Rockdale police said 12 days later they were called to the mobile home and found the woman dead with a SINGLE gunshot wound to the forehead.
