Rockdale High School football players and coaches were honored at Monday night’s city council meeting for winning the 2023 Battle of the Bell at the suggestion of council members Esmeralda Ruelas-Olivares and Scott Starnes. Mayor Brett Boren presented a plaque made for this special occasion which read “Rockdale High School is known for its competitive nature for the Battle of the Bell; this recognition relates to the team winning the yearly Battle of the Bell football game with a 47-21 win over Cameron High School on Oct. 20; since 1954 the winner has received the big brass bell to ring for victory; the bell was donated to the two schools by the Rockdale Sandow & Southern Railroad in 1954; the coaching staff, players and support of the 2023 Rockdale High School football team are very much deserving of the recognition for their success; I, Mayor Brett M. Boren, Mayor of the City of Rockdale, have the distinct honor of congratulating the 2023 Rockdale High School Football Team for winning this year’s big brass victory bell.”
