GALYESTON—Nen Esten Cooke, co-publisher of The Roc k d a l e Reporter, was elected treasurer of the Texas Press Association, beginning an officer rotation in which he should eventually assume the president’s position.
The election came at the annual TPA Convention and Trade S how at Moody Gardens Hotel in Galveston.
“Becoming a TPA officer is important to me because I respect the organization that advocates for the industry in which I was raised,” said Cooke, a fourth-generation publisher. “Also, God willing, I will eventually succeed three people that mean a lot to me.”
Cooke’s great grandfather, Rockdale ReporterPublisher John Esten Cooke, was president in 1920-1921.
“ t makes me very proud to continue my family legacy,” Ken Cooke said.
As publisher at the F red - er rg t rdR o os t, Cooke succeeded the late Fredericksburg StanardPublisher Art Kowert, who was TPA president in 1953-1954 , and previous Publisher Terry Collier, who served as president in 2009-2010.
Cooke also will lead an effort to increase funding for the Texas Newspaper Foundation, which works with the Texas Center for Community Journalism and universities to train newspaper staff.
The TNF plans to expand its mission and its fundraising efforts by appealing to efforts to prevent “news deserts,” those counties or geographical areas that are not served by a newspaper.
Ken Cooke and wife Christine Granados are co-publishers of The Roc k - a l e Reporter.
