Many people in Rockdale may have already met David Money, the newest addition to The Rockdale Reporter staff, but for those who have not, Money is being groomed by Mike Brown to take over editing duties.
Brown, who has been with The Reporter for 46 years, will retire in November and Money will have large shoes to fill. (The Reporter will have a story about Brown’s retirement and contributions to the Rockdale community in an October issue.)
Money, who has had a hand in every part of the newspaper publishing industry, is ready for the assignment.
“Rockdale offered me the chance to get back to running a newsroom as I did in The Woodlands and in Alvin earlier in my career,” he said. “I am finding the people here at The Reporter to be most helpful in showing me the ropes and attentive to my needs in helping me do a good job.
“My goal is to keep up the high standard that the staff has already set. Toward that end I have already met several community leaders that will help me keep readers of The Reporter informed of what is going on in their community and schools,” Money said. “I would also like to see The Reporter reach more people in both its print form, web page and social media.” Money is coming to Rock
Money is coming to Rockdale from the Longview News-Journal where he worked as a copy editor and page designer.
He’s managed daily and weekly newspapers in Marble Falls, Victoria, Bryan and the Woodlands. He’s also worked in sports for newspapers in Las Vegas, Biloxi and in Texas.
He’ll keep The Reporter’s winning tradition alive as he has his own tradition of excellence.
He was named copy editor of the month eight times at the Daytona Beach News Journal and has won numerous awards at the national, state, regional and local levels in Texas, Mississippi and Florida.
“David’s hire helps us keep up the quality expected by the community, following Mike and my father, Bill Cooke (who edited and published the paper from the 1960s through the 2000s),” said Ken Esten Cooke, fourth-generation publisher. “We’re happy to welcome him on board and gain from his vast experience at news organizations of all different sizes.”
