MONTGOMERY—For the second straight year, The Rockdale Reporter received first place in sports coverage at the 2018 Texas Press Association awards banquet Saturday.
The TPA Better Newspaper Contest is a state-wide competition.
The Reporter sports sections were rewarded for coverage of the Tigers’ 2017 state football championship.
The Reporter received a second place for feature photos, which included Bill Martin’s sports photo of Tiger pole vaulter Gavin Young.
“I really want to know how you got the high jumper to balance like that! What an intriguing photo,” judges said.
The Reporter was also awarded a second place in news photos, which featured Mike Brown’s photos.
“Good job of getting close to the scenes, especially in the fire photos,” said the judges.
The Reporter placed fourth in the sweepstakes, behind winner The Port Aransas South Jetty.
This year, over 142 newspapers turned in 1,410 entries.
