Residential property values in Milam County, which were mailed out last month, have increased by just under 17 percent.
But Milam Appraisal District Chief Appraiser Dyann White said the response from the public has been less than expected “given the large increases.”
“I believe most homeowners know our values are closer to true market value than they have been the last few years,” she said.
“Some property owners are surprised to hear that we are required to be within 5 percent of their actual purchase price,” White said.
“I think the mentality has been that our appraisals should be below market values by a wider margin, but that’s just not true,” she added.
Rural homesteads went up 21.6 percent, oil and gas 18 percent and vacant rural land 11.5 percent.
Multi-vehicle wreck Tuesday at Pettibone
Two women went to a Temple hospital after a multi-vehicle, chain-reaction in a Texas 36 construction zone in Pettibone Monday morning.
According to the Department of Public safety, several eastbound vehicles were stopped in a construction zone at the direction of a fl agger.
A pickup struck the last vehicle in line causing a chain reaction wreck that damaged two other vehicles, the DPS said.
As a result, one vehicle went into the westbound lane and struck another car.
Taken to Scott & White Hospital were Francisca Hernandez of Cameron and Jacklyn Venable of Katy. “Involved but unhurt,” according to the DPS, were Michael Junek, Jerrie Mus-low and Kyle Jones, all of Cameron.
The highway, which runs conterminous with US 190 between Milano and the Bell County line, was shut down for about an hour and traffic was re-routed around the accident site using county roads.
Cameron volunteer firefighters, the sheriff’s department and numerous ambulances responded.
Cameron-area JP draws reprimand from state
Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Sam Berry has drawn a public reprimand from the State Commission on Judicial Conduct in February over a situation which existed for a few months four years ago.
The commission found Berry and then Cameron City Prosecutor Jenny Gebhart were in an “intimate relationship” and Berry did not recuse himself from cases she handled for the city between March and August, 2014.
There were no trials involved. Some plea bargains were signed by Berry.
The couple are still together and have two children. They issued a statement to a Temple newspaper saying the 2014 situation had been managed with Gebhart’s resignation and noted the past situation was anonymously reported to the state as candidates began to file for the 2018 election.
Berry won the GOP nomination for a new term in March.
He has no Democratic opposition in November.
