Blue-and-Gold fall to Lady Cougars, 52-49; Miles scores 28 points

For much of Friday evening, the Lady Tigers struggled against Class 4A Jarrell, who was coming off a 56-15 win over Rockdale’s district foe Troy just three days before.

Throughout most of the game, the Lady Tigers would keep the Williamson County squad from scoring for multiple possessions, and cut the JHS lead down to 10 or 11 points. Unfortunately for RHS, Jarrell immediately erased any progress they made on any of those runs.

In spite of that, Rockdale never stopped battling. They chipped away little-by-little at Jarrell’s 42-23 lead early in the third and trailed 50-46 with 1:57 left to play in the game.

As fans from both sides of the gym rose to their feet, Jarrell’s Jasmine Benavidez got a shot up quickly to put her team up 52-46 before Rockdale’s Ciara answered back to make it 52-48 with 1:21 left in the game. RHS hit one f ree throw to get within a three-pointer of JHS, the Lady Tigers ultimately fell short and received their first loss of the season.

Miles led the Lady Tigers with 28 points while Robertson scored nine. Freshman Grace Patton also scored with four and her classmate Trinity Hurd hit three free throws in the fourth for three points. Senior Mijah Crawford also ended the night with three. The team was without sophomore T’Niyah Miles, who saw significant minutes last season. Rockdale outscored Jarrell 26-14 in the second half and held the Lady Cougars to five points in the fourth.

LAST WEEK— Three days before that, RHS secured their second victory of the 2022-23 season, taking down Caldwell on the road, 50-48. Ciara Miles led the way with 26 points. Crawford had nine and Robertson scored eight.

THIS WEEK— On Monday afternoon, the Lady Tigers stayed at home to face neighbor Thorndale. Due to the early release of this week’s edition of The Reporter, results from this contest will be in next week.

Following the Thanksgiving break, Rockdale is back in action on Friday, hosting Burton at the RHS Gymnasium for a tip-off at 3 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Friday, Nov. 4, but was moved due to Burton’s football game that same day.

Rockdale also travels to Normangee on Tuesday, Nov. 29. Coming off a trip to the Class 2A regional finals this past February, the Lady Panthers are off to a rocky 1-4 start with losses to Hearne, Class 3A Teague and Class 4A schools Madisonville and Navasota. NHS lost key players like dominant center Kourtney Wright to graduation but still have top guards such as Christina Witherspoon. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

TIGERS— The Blue-and-Gold were off Friday but took down Snook last Tuesday evening at home, 67-36. RHS senior Robert Owens was the leading scorer with 18 points. Ivan Bonner and Chris Miles each had 13.

THIS WEEK— The undefeated Tigers were host to Bartlett Monday evening after press time and travel to Hearne on Tuesday. RHS returns to action following the break at the Salado Tournament, where they will play Dec. 1-3.
