“Since adding the technology credit back to the local requirements for graduation, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of students who are more competent and productive with word processing and spreadsheets. There have been immediate benefits to having our students work toward earning the Microsoft Office Specialist certification,” said Glenda Walker, business education instructor yeacher for RISD.

“In the Business Information Management I course, we work toward Microsoft Word Specialist certification in the fall, and toward Microsoft Excel certification in the spring along with other applications and products,” she said.

Every high school student in the district can enroll and take the necessary courses to earn these Microsoft certifications through RISD Career and Technical Education.

This week, students in the course took the certification exam to test their knowledge and technical skills and many were awarded with a certificate and something to add to their resume.

Senior students who earned Microsoft Word Specialist Certification are: Elissa Hebert, Edward Klekar, Bryce Govan-Miller, Keymani Hamilton, Makayla Montelongo, Alex Wilson, Christopher Thompson, Irma Nesbit, Ethan Taylor, and Skylar Matlock.

These students have all demonstrated that they are “College and Career Ready” by having the skills, knowledge and abilities needed to succeed in life, whether they plan to attend college (two- or four-year, or technical school) or go directly into the workforce.

One student took the certification exam at the expert level. With a score of 945 out of 1000, Analece Sandles has earned the title of Microsoft Word Expert as a senior in high school.

“The Microsoft certifications delivered through Certiport, help high school students earn industry-recognized credentials for job attainment and college and career success,” said Britina Pesak, executive director of College and Career Readiness at Rockdale ISD.

“The district is extremely proud of all of the students who work to earn certifications to demonstrate their college and career readiness. We appreciate Mrs. Walker’s dedication to her students and passion for the program and look forward to its continued growth in the future,” Pesak said.
